SEMINAR

AHP heads to the low country in 2014

Mark your calendars for the AHP "Gallop n' Grits" Seminar to be held in Charleston, South Carolina on June 19-21, 2014.

The Charleston area has been named Top U.S. City by Cond Nast Traveler 2013 Readers' Choice Awards for the third consecutive year. The historic coastal destination is well known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, celebrated restaurant community and southern hospitality. In 2014, AHP members will have an opportunity to explore the charms of Charleston as well as learn, recharge, and enjoy some face time with fellow members.

The AHP annual seminar, named "Gallop n' Grits," will be held on June 19-21, at the Francis Marion Hotel, whose namesake was known as the Swamp Fox during the Revolutionary War. Group room rates start at $169 for traditional rooms and $199 for deluxe. (Current state and local taxes are 13%, a destination marketing fee of $1 per night will be added) Wireless internet is complimentary in all guestrooms for AHP seminar attendees. The posted rates for the hotel in June are over $200, so while group rates seem high, the downtown location of this hotel will be well worth it.

The seminar committee is continuing to fine-tune the seminar plans and will keep members updated on the website, by email, and in the e-newsletter. At this time, we can announce that Palmetto Carriage Tours will host a Thursday afternoon carriage ride and tour for AHP members and that Ryan Dohrn will return to present a video workshop on Saturday.

We hope to see ya'll there!

Talk about renewing old acquaintances for the New Year. AHP member, Elizabeth McCall, not only caught up with former Cavalia star Sylvia Zerbini, who's entertained thousands with her troupe of Arabian liberty horses, but McCall also sat in on Zerbini's first-of-the-year Liberty Horse Training Clinic at The Healing Equine Ranch in Agoura, California. "I've known Sylvia as a gifted performer, but not as an educator before. This was the most clear-cut explanation of liberty work I've encountered. I was not only taking notes, I went home and applied them," says McCall.

2014's debut brought the author and journalist an added delight. Former Dressage Today editor and friend Patricia Lasko paid McCall and her "talking horse" a visit, during a trip to the Los Angeles area. "It was great seeing Patty again. Time disappears around someone like her. And, yes, RajaliKa 'talked' for her. Definitely something about 2014 being the Year of the Horse. I'm sure of it."

 2014: Your year of discovery

By Stacy V. Bearse

In the good old days, our magazines were protected franchises. We invested our capital, time and sweat to carve out a market niche. The high cost and hard work required to replicate our efforts created a competitive moat around our brand castles. In business-speak, we were protected by a high barrier to entry.

Equestrians asked to take social media for equine businesses survey

Submitted by Liam Killen, Equestrian Creative Network

Social media has revolutionized how information gets to us.  The equestrian world has embraced this new media phenomenon. Horsepeople are using social media to keep themselves up-to-date with news, getting the latest offers from their favorite brands and discovering new ways of working.

The Equestrian Social Media Awards team is helping with a BSc Honours Equine Management degree dissertation, being researched by a student from CAFRE Enniskillen Campus in Northern Ireland. The dissertation is an investigation into social media's benefits for equestrian businesses, and seeks to uncover the truth about social media's impact on the equestrian industry. The research asks the questions everyone's been seeking the answers for and will shed light on the real benefits of social media.

There are two surveys to choose from, depending on whether you work in the equestrian field or not. Each survey takes no longer than ten minutes to complete. The survey closes at midnight (GMT) on 31st January 2014. A detailed report of the findings will be available through the Equestrian Creative Network.

4 Tips to start the new year

Submitted by Rob "Robo" Hendrickson

1. Read the book "Rework" by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson. It's powerful for keeping your business small and focused. The book is written by founders of 37Signals who developed Basecamp, a project management tool that is priceless.

2. Start the year off with 5 strategic goals for the year. Big ones that will move your business. Then make sure everybody's to-do lists match those top 5 each week.

3. Have 1 to 3, measurable objectives for the conference. (I.e. I want to meet 1 key partner to open a new distribution channel.) No objectives; don't go to the conference.

4. Follow the Internet Marketers groups. They are publishers who sell how-to information products. They are on the forefront of leveraging the Internet and its true potential. Read between the lines and how it applies to your publishing business.

Rob "Robo" Hendrickson has worked with senior executives developing marketing and Internet strategy for Sony, Blockbuster, GameStop, XM Satellite Radio, Western Horseman, Quarter Horse News, Barrel Horse News, HorseCity.com, Alaska Magazine, Gray's Sporting Journal, Justin, MosquitoNix and Texas Industries. In 2010 he became a partner in FullBucket Animal Nutrition a division of Animal Stewards International.

Should your horse business brush up on its Latin?

 Submitted by L.A. Pomeroy, Equinista

Two words: Juan Pablo.

It's hard to find a rock big enough to hide under to avoid the promotional barrage accompanying ABC-TV's latest edition of The Bachelor. But whatever your opinion of reality-based entertainment, there's a message here about the direction demographics are headed that no one, including our horse industry, should ignore.

To coin a stylish quip, cross-cultural marketing is the new black.

According to 2012 US Census Bureau QuickFacts, 16.9% of our population is Hispanic; further projections, some as soon as 2020, denote a continued shift away from a white majority.

In Stuart Elliot's January 7 piece in The New York Times, he cited, "It is hard to overstate the increasing influence of the growing Hispanic population upon Madison Avenue." Not only has television embraced its first Latin lead, Juan Pablo Galavis, but got its Tarentino fix, thanks to the series, Killer Women, based on an Argentine drama that includes Sofia (Modern Family) Vergara among its executive producers; and lest you wonder where sports marketing is on the trend, tune in to ESPN Deportes, celebrating its 10th anniversary on the air, or Coca-Cola sponsoring a trip to soccer camp during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

If your product labels or advertising campaigns aren't running messages in multiple languages, relax. 'Targeted' marketing is evolving faster than a racehorse into a 'total-market' or cross-cultural approach, as second- and third-generations of Hispanic (and other) consumers define growing up already straddling cultures.

"The multicultural customer is the new mainstream," Toyota Motor Sales USA announced when reorganizing its own agency. Instead of ads for specific audiences, Toyota is going back to advertising basics with Everyman messages whose broad appeal puts people first, and cultural narrative second.

As Mike Valds-Fauli, who headed the JeffreyGroup before leaving to preside over its cross-cultural spin-off agency, Pinta, said: "A big part of advertising is narrative storytelling and getting the consumer to act upon the narrative. If you get that right, the rest can fall into place."

This new Year of the Horse is the perfect time to assess your company's strategy, and if your promotional narrative is solely reflecting your current clients, isn't it time to consider tomorrow's prospective ones as well?

Si, es claro. The Latin consumer is here to stay.

A resolution to re-focus in 2014

By Chris Brune, AHP Executive Director

I have a hard time focusing these days. My first thought was, "My brain just doesn't function as well anymore." I scratched that thought.

While I'm sure some things don't work as well as they did when I was younger, I think the brain can function very well into the golden age.

So I'm blaming my inability to focus on too many distractions. Or my inability to curtail all the distractions that modern technology has placed at our disposal.

USPS raises postal rates
Magazine publishers and direct mail marketers got a lump of coal in their stockings over the holidays, with the Postal Regulatory Commission's decision to approve an "exigent rate increase" on postage for First Class Mail and Standard Mail, which includes magazines, catalogues, and direct mailings. In response to a request from the USPS board of governors, the PRC voted 2-to-1 to approve a 4.3% increase in Standard Mail rates, which works out to 5.9% when the customary inflation adjustment is included, effective January 26.

Passionate subscribers fuel niche publications
horse-stable.jpg

Andrew Davis, author of the book "Brandscaping" and a media consultant, shared his thoughts in a December The New York Times post about the sustained success of niche magazines in a world where many general interest magazines are suffering. It seems that the general public is willing to give up their traditional magazines and newspapers in favor of getting their news online or on devices. However, don't mess with their subscriptions to their favorite hobby.

Five reasons why traditional media still matters

Bill Shelton, Left Field Creative, recommends that fellow AHP members read this article written by Lisa Noble, Cramer-Krasselt and published on PRWeek. A must read for everyone at AHP."

 ASSOCIATION UPDATES
Awards contest is underway; what's new for 2014?

Before you start pouring through your files, there are several important changes that affect how you submit your online entries this year.

The Digital Media division of the awards contest is a continual "work in progress" due to evolving ways in which content is delivered online. Instead of being a mirror of print content, today's online content can have a different focus. Where print editorial is comprised of static type, graphics, and photography, digital content is multimedia with the addition of rich media like video, podcasts, audio, etc.

This year, members will be required to submit their online entries using one permanent link (URL) that never changes. There are several reasons for this. 1). Online class entries, particularly blogs and collections, can have multiple URLs. This results in URL overload for processing and judging entries. 2). Online entries are usually "old news" by the contest, and the pages may no longer be live on the site or the URL changed since the entry was submitted.

Archiving is also going to be required this year. Your online content is going to become more important as time passes. You won't be able to search for an article online as easily as flipping through a library of print publications unless you have an online library or archive. Including the date of publication in your links is important for historical value as well as proof of publication date.

If you only have single article entries, one URL per article is all that is required as long as it's a permanent link and includes the date of publication. Using the AHP site as an example, the URL may look like this: i.e., www.AHP.org/AHPawards/How-I-Entered-The-Contest-12-14-2013.html

Blogs and multimedia collections may have multiple URLs. If these pages or posts are not already catalogued on a landing page or archived by year, then you will have to create a page with a permanent link where you can upload the files to be judged. Using AHP as an example for a blog, you would bundle all the links to the various media under one URL address. ie: www.ahp.org/AHPawards/blog2013.html

When this page is accessed, it will have all the individual links listed such as:

www.MyJanuaryPost@blogspot.com

www.MyFebruaryPost@blogspot.com

If you do not have an archive system in place or need help with setting up a landing page for your awards entries, your webmaster and/or IT department can provide the parameters that will fit your website's structure.

Blogs definitely should have an archive. A blog is like a diary. It is content that tells a story or records an event in historical order. Blog entries will be required to submit only one permanent URL address that links directly to the archive of the blog posts for 2013.

More importantly, this year archiving becomes one of the criteria for judging the blog class along with writing, engagement with readers, user-friendliness, originality, personality, visual aesthetics, variety of subject, and evidence of social media promotion.

To recap, members are requested to do three things before submitting online entries:

1. Archive entries on your site at a permanent URL that will not change. Many content management systems already do this, so no extra work will be required in those situations.

2. Online entries with multiple links must be submitted as one permanent link (one page cataloguing all the components of the entry). If you do not normally archive online content in this manner, discuss this with your webmaster or IT department to create such a catalog page.

3. Make sure the date of publication is included in the linked content (for entry date verification).

Deadline date for entries is on or before February 19, 2014. No late entries accepted.
