In Memoriam
Frank Holmes (1947-2013) lost his battle with cancer on January 12. Frank's love for horses began as a teenager in North Dakota. He submitted his first article to Western Horseman in 1961 when he was 13 years old and was published at the age of 14. Frank interests have always been centered on the historical aspect of the western horse breeds, and his broad-based knowledge of the origins of the Quarter Horse, Paint, Appaloosa and Palomino registries have established him as one of the pre-eminent historians of all time. As a former staff writer for Western Horseman magazine, Frank co-authored volumes 2 through 6 and was the sole author of volume 8 of the immensely popular Quarter Horse Legends book series and authored The Hank Wiescamp Story. As the award-winning Features Editor of The Paint Horse Journal he contributed a steady stream of top-notch personality profiles, genetic studies and historical overviews. In early 2001, Frank launched LOFT Enterprises, LLC - his own publishing company. Since that time he devoted the lion's share of his journalistic efforts to the research and writing of historical books designed to capture the West's rich history and pass it on in a way that both enlightens and entertains.

Her dedication and vision led her to tackle several important issues that made a major impact on the industry's development. Through her hard work, savvy business acumen and courage, Connie was a pioneer business woman, who served as an example for other women striving to succeed as entrepreneurs and managers.

Definition of a Publishing Service Provider
Publishing Service Providers (PSP) include a business or individual who provides a service relative to publishing, print or digital media, such as a printer, software service or supplier, equine photography, journalism, publishing equipment manufacturer, etc.

PSPs are required to have a representative present at their table during the mid-morning and mid-afternoon coffee breaks held on Friday and Saturday. PSPs may also be present at other times during the seminar and provide a signup sheet at their table for attendees to make appointments for more in-depth conversations. PSP Tables will be located inside or adjacent to the AHP Resource Center. Table signs, banners, displays, promotional items, and literature must all fit on the table. No backgrounds, standup displays, or hanging banners allowed. PSPs are responsible for inbound and outbound shipments, set-up and dismantle of their table and materials.

AHP Annual Awards Contest entries exceed expectations in 2013
| Can you find Judy Lincoln in the piles of award entries that were processed in the AHP office? |
This year's contest entries were increased by 72 over last year for a total of 758. AHP member participants also increased from 90 to 104. The 2013 Awards Contest entries for material published in and dated 2012 are now in the hands of the judges as AHP members eagerly await the announcement of the finalists by April 29. This year's contest included 57 classes covering everything equine-related from editorial content to design to photography to online media to books.
Held since 1974, the AHP Annual Awards Contest provides members with an opportunity to be recognized for excellence in equine publishing, both print and digital media.
Why do members enter the contest?
Rewarding accomplishment - Nothing feels better than being recognized for your work. Whether you are staff, a freelancer, or business, achieving excellence in your field is rewarding and demonstrates high standards. All finalists receive a plaque as class winner or a certificate for second, third or honorable mention. Staff members and freelancers love receiving these as recognition of their achievement.
Constructive critique - Every entry receives a constructive critique from the judges. These comments can help members to improve their work or be rewarded for a job well done.
Promotion - Members can spread their publishing excellence to the equine world by promoting and publishing their awards.
Resume builder - Freelancers can add their awards to resumes to build their reputation in the equine publishing world.
Good Luck to all the 2013 entrants!

Nancy O'Brien, a popular speaker at Camp Niche Ad Sales Trainings. She knows a simple, straightforward way to make you a Superstar in Ad Sales. "When talking with your customers about ad sales, it's important to also provide valuable research that they can use in their business. Think of yourself as not just an ad salesperson but also as a marketing consultant with information that will make your customers look good," says Nancy. The carefully gleaned information you provide to your customers can be about a product, service, industry or about marketing in general-just as long as it's helpful to them.
Here are some solid reasons for doing your (and their) homework:
- Research can prove that the customer made the right decision buying advertising from you in the first place
- Marketers love research as it helps them understand their customers and their own products better
- Providing research sets you apart from your competitors by providing a valuable service
- Very few ad sales reps offer research for their customers - it puts you in the Big League

5 Great email subject lines prospects/clients will open
By NicheMedia's Grand Poobah, Carl Landau
No doubt about it-email can be your lifeline to your prospects and clients. It's frustrating when you can't seem to get a response. But these people are very busy and inundated with emails. How the heck do you get them to open YOUR email? The key is personalization. Make sure you always begin the subject line with their first name. It grabs their attention.
Here's 5 subject lines that really work....
1. <First Name>, Great talking to you!
You should be following up after every sales call. The info they were interested in during the call will float away within a few minutes after the call. Your follow up email will remind them of the important information discussed. I use this subject line because it reminds them that they know me (so they open it) and has a quick action item in it.
2. <First Name>, I just sent you a voice mail
OK, I hate leaving a voice mail with a prospect. They probably won't listen to it. But, at some point you have to leave one. This subject line works. Much better chance they will listen to the vm plus they get hit twice with a message. (And you better leave them a great idea and not "The closing date is blah, blah, blah...." It's a double hit with them that works.
3. <First Name>, You don't send me flowers anymore! OR <First Name>, Are you still alive?
This one is really effective! This is a situation when the prospect has promised they would get back to you for weeks and you use guilt. Is it OK to use guilt? Heck yes, we are in ad sales, you gotta use whatever you got.
4. We're covering <Product> in the March issue!
We would have product round ups all the time in our magazines. You mention that you are featuring their product in your magazine and you need info-you'll get a response in a heartbeat.
5. <First Name>, We covered you on page 63 this month!
Any time you do a company or product mention in your magazine or on your website you want the client to know about it.

How to use hashtags in your social media marketing
By Rachel Sprung | Published February 21, 2013 | SocialMediaExaminer.com
Do you use hashtags in your social media marketing? What if someone else is using the same hashtag about a totally different topic? Even worse, what if your competitor is using the same hashtag about the same topic?
Before you just throw any word or phrase out there and decide to use it as your hashtag, there are a few things you'll want to consider to maximize your hashtag's exposure.
A hashtag is a pound sign (#), but it's also used on Twitter to categorize messages. Since the first person used a hashtag in August 2007, they have become one of the most commonly used symbols on Twitter. People use them to organize conversations, tweet at events and engage in conversations online.
But in order to have a successful marketing campaign using a hashtag, you have to know how to pick the right hashtag.
Here are 4 tips for choosing a successful hashtag.
1: Choose Something Unique
2: Choose Something Easy to Remember
3: Use the Hashtag on Multiple Social Media Channels
4: Search for the Hashtag Before You Use It
Want to learn how to apply these four tips, click here.
