Student Award Contest celebrates 20 years in 2013

The AHP Student Award program, started in 1993, was initiated to promote awareness of the career opportunities available to college students interested in equine publishing. In 2013, the Student Award program will celebrate its 20th anniversary. "This program has been a win-win for both the students and the association," says AHP Executive Director Chris Brune. "Not only does it offer students a chance to learn about a career they may be passionate about, but it also has given equine publishing a long list of talented young people who are an asset to our industry and our association."

Are you ready to "Meet at the Peak?"

Pikes Peak

The 2013 Colorado Springs Seminar has been named.

With over 60 seminar names submitted for consideration, the AHP Board of Directors sent their top five favorites to be surveyed by the AHP membership. The five finalists names were: Best of the West, Meet at the Peak, Ride to the Summit, Rocky Equine High and Summit at the Springs. All suggested names were submitted to the AHP Board and membership anonymously.

A very tight race where the results changed hourly was decided by 117 member votes at midnight on October 15th. "Meet at the Peak" was at the top of the list followed by Summit at the Springs and Ride to the Summit, separated by only one vote.

Who submitted the winning name? "Apparently after visiting Colorado Springs last year, I was inspired," says Chris Brune. "These were all really great names and I would have loved any of the five. I thought each one brought a unique look at the best of the west that Colorado Springs has to offer from mountains and springs to horses and riding." The other finalists' seminar names were the creations of L.A. Pomeroy, Diane Rice and Judy Lincoln.

Once the seminar has a name, it becomes a reality to anticipate and prepare for. The survey also indicated that 93.2% of members are planning or hope to attend the seminar scheduled for June 20-22, 2013 at the Colorado Springs Marriott.

Let's all Meet at the Peak!

Ready to book your room?

The Colorado Springs Marriott has set up a link to AHP group reservations. The group code has already been entered with the king/double standard room rate of $120. All rooms come with either a mountain or city view, but views cannot be guaranteed at this rate.

Are you one of the lucky ones with Custom YouTube Thumbnails?

By James Wedmore | Published November 6, 2012 | SocialMediaExaminer.com

One of the exciting new features that YouTube is rolling out is the Custom YouTube Thumbnail. Until now, YouTube randomly selected three still images for you to choose from to use as your video's thumbnail.

But this is changing. Select users can now upload an image of their choosing to represent their video. This custom thumbnail will be displayed in search result pages, related videos and as the start image on embedded videos.

One of the easiest ways to get more views on your videos is to have an appealing thumbnail image. When you have little control of your thumbnail selection, you leave a lot up to chance. But there's more. YouTube actually measures the click-through rate (CTR) of your video. A good thumbnail = more views.

To check if you're one of the lucky YouTubers, head on over to your Video Manager and select the Edit button on any one of your past videos. Below the three options for thumbnails, you could discover the Custom Thumbnail button.

If you discover you have already been given this powerful marketing gift, pay close attention: You need to create custom thumbnails for all of your past videos as soon as possible. A custom thumbnail option is too powerful and it may be abused. When that happens, YouTube may just take it away for good.

The following are a few tips to follow to make your  thumbnails as effective as possible:

1: Make it Relevant!

Make the effort to choose thumbnail images relevant to your video.

2: Find the Perfect Still Shot

Choose thumbnail images that capture your viewers' attention.

3: Add Text

A thumbnail image should highlight the contents of the video.

4: Add Color

Bright neon colors tend to stand out. Incorporate bright, contrasting colors into your thumbnail so the viewer's eye travels right over to you!

Unfortunately, not everyone has this new option. Seems YouTube is using a random selection method as to who gets the feature. We can only hope that YouTube is slowly rolling this feature out to all (fingers crossed).

If you don't have the custom thumbnail feature, go ahead and activate the monetization feature on your account, and just be patient. I believe monetizing your channel helps your chances--even though I've found non-monetized channels with this function available. To enable monetization on your YouTube channel, go to Settings, select Monetization and activate it.

Even though you want your channel monetized, you can select which of your videos will have advertisements. You'll want to deselect as many as possible. I decided to simply have three or four of my oldest videos monetized.

How to effectively rebrand your social media profiles

By AJ Kumar | Published November 5, 2012 | SocialMediaExaminer.com

Are you considering a rebrand of your company's existing social identity? Before we review the process of rebranding your social media profiles, consider whether a rebranding is truly right for your company.

Your social networking profile branding plays a major role in your company's online image.  If you're only conducting a rebrand because you like the sound of a new name better, your end results may not be worth the extra effort and potential for losses involved in the rebranding process.

As a result, rebranding is best suited for companies that are:

  • Changing their overall structure (perhaps as the result of a merger or acquisition).
  • Substantially diversifying their product offerings (to the point where the existing identity is no longer applicable).
  • Addressing business aspects that are outdated or failed.

If you're approaching the rebranding process for one of these reasons, then here's what you need to do to rebrand your social media profiles.

Step #1: Do Your Due Diligence

To avoid missteps that may tarnish your brand's reputation, carry out the following tasks before even hinting to your audience about the potential for a rebranding:

  • Secure the .com version of your new brand name's URL.
  • Make sure that the Twitter handle you want associated with your new brand is still available.
  • Run focus groups with existing customers to uncover any hidden issues with your proposed rebranding.

Step #2: Understand Social Network Limitations

As you prepare for rebranding, there are some limitations that restrict your ability to change profile information. While these restrictions shouldn't affect your ultimate ability to rebrand your social media profiles, you'll want to account for them before you begin undertaking the change process.

Facebook: Currently, Facebook does not allow page owners to change the names of their pages once they've accrued 200 likes, in order to prevent the buying and selling of Facebook fans.

Twitter: Changing your username and profile information within Twitter is quite easy.

YouTube: While YouTube doesn't allow users to change their registered usernames, it is possible to create vanity URLs that effectively "mask" an old channel's content to display at a rebranded URL.

LinkedIn: Finally, while there are no issues changing your personal LinkedIn profile, the rebranding process becomes more complicated when it comes to LinkedIn Groups and Company Pages.

Step #3: Communicate Clearly to Your Customers

Make sure that all of the following elements play a part in your communications strategy.

  • Create a video explaining the reasoning behind your rebranding
  • Make it very clear what is and is not changing
  • Communicate using as many formats as possible

Don't expect that your customers will be on board with your rebranding process initially. However, by clearly communicating from the get-go, you'll ensure the process is carried out in the appropriate order and you'll minimize the impact of lost customers and goodwill as you rebrand your image.
