Geyer Sound System Gets Boost

Here is an article that ran in the Trib this summer about Good Sound Studio and the Geyer Performing Arts Center.

Shows at the Geyer Performing Arts Center recently got a lot more enjoyable for audience members thanks to a generous donation by a local business.

Dwight Brown owner of Good Sound Studio Inc. of New Stanton, recently donated sound equipment and installation services to the turn of the century theater in Scottdale.

"We've become one of the leading resources in the area for theatrical productions and saw this as a way to promote and support the arts here at the Geyer theater," Brown said.

Good Sound Studio provides live sound production services, sound system design and installation all over southwestern Pennsylvania. They also sell most major brands of professional sound equipment and rentals of sound equipment.

They began providing sound services at the theater in 2010 for the three summer musicals. By 2012, the Geyer began using Good Sound for all of its musicals and this year added sound to the plays as well.

"We felt one of the things that was lacking was being able to hear and understand the performers and we thought the audience would benefit from this donation," Brown said.

Good Sound's donation included: Eurocomm mixers in the control room and back stage, a Behringer X32 Digital Mixer at the front of house and an ER300 Series wireless handheld. The company also donated QSC Acoustic Design Series speakers on the floor level and in the balcony. The company also provided all of the installation free of charge. Brown said the total dollar value of the donation was between $7,000 and $8,000.

"Dwight Brown and Good Sound Studio is one of the most professional sound engineers in our area and we at the Geyer are honored that he took the interest in our little theater," said Geyer PAC Board President Brad Geyer. "His donation has really enabled us to take the next step toward the quality of our shows."

The new equipment has been used for several shows already this season and the difference in the sound has already made a noticeable difference to audiences.

Brad Henry of Uniontown not only sees many productions at the Geyer, but also has been musical director for several productions at the theater. "The new sound equipment makes it a more pleasant experience for everyone, those attending the shows and for the performers because everyone can hear what is going on especially our older patrons who have been coming to the theater for years," Henry said.

Down to The Nitty Gritty with the X32

Kyle Miller: FOH (NGDB), Dwight Brown: Good Sound Studio, Jimmie Fadden: Drummer (NGDB), Stan Martinez: Monitor Engineer/Production Manager (NGDB)
Back in early May we had the pleasure of working with the production crew of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. They were in town for a show at the Palace Theater in Greensburg and were looking for a way to simplify their set up and also improve consistency in production from show to show. They saw that we were a Behringer dealer and were very interested in the X32 digital console that we had in stock.

Kyle Miller, the band's FOH engineer sent me an email and left a voice mail expressing his interest in seeing this board that he has heard so much about from so many other sound techs on the road. After giving the guys a live tour at our shop and spending the day with them at their show, they left for the rest of their tour with our X32 and a lot of smiles!

Here is what Stan Martinez recently had to say about the Behringer X32 and Good Sound Studio:

"We have enjoyed using the X32 this summer and the band and I have been

pleased with it's quality of sound and it's proven to be very dependable! The

time you spent on the initial set up has been a time saver for me as the

engineer and for the band during sound checks. In fact as far as monitors go

we only need to do a line check and sound check is basically for FOH. It's

made my life a lot easier and the bands a lot happier!!

"Everyone that we've worked with asks the same question, 'How do you like it?' My response is the same every time, I enjoy working on it, and the way my i-Pad works with it makes it even more enjoyable, for me and the band

members! They get to see and hear their requests as I stand next to them with my i-Pad.

"We had the opportunity once this past summer to have an X32 at FOH and ours for monitors. The show was in Stargazers Theater in Colorado Springs, CO. and Evan Hooten has been to work shops with Behringer for the X32. He was

impressed with the way you had set up the board for me and Kyle Miller, our

FOH engineer, enjoyed using his as a FOH console.

"The X32 has been trouble free and there have been no complaints, from me,

our band or other audio engineers who have used it! THANX Again for the time

you spent with us in setting it up. Also appreciate you following up to make

sure we are pleased with it's performance."

Shaler High School Plans Upgrades

Having done some work for Shaler High School and their musical program, I have developed a relationship with their auditorium technicians. I have seen them struggle with the sound reproduction for several years, trying to combat poor equipment and design within the overall system. Following this past spring musical I felt it was worth suggesting some upgrades of the sound system to the administration to see if we could possibly improve the situation for them.

Fortunately the administration agreed and after some bid requests, we were awarded the contract to upgrade their high school auditorium sound system. The major point of concern was with the speaker configuration. That was where we began our design.

The biggest obstacle for the sound guys during musical production was not getting enough volume from their wireless microphones. Unfortunately they were dealing with a stage that extended well beyond the position of the speakers, creating feedback far more often than not when trying to rise above the volume of the orchestra. Our solution was to relocate new EV EVF-1122D speakers, 3 of them hung in an array, out into the house beyond the stage. This new position will allow for maximum gain before feedback and ensure enough volume to mix well with the orchestra.

In addition to some other equipment, they will be replacing a PreSonus StudioLive 24 with the Behringer X32 digital console. Not only will this new mixer offer more channels but it will include many other functions not available on the PreSonus. One feature is the scribble strip that will allow them to name each channel and what character has that microphone, instead of needing console tape and a marker to identify each channel. They also like the ability to run the console from an iPad or iPhone without the need for a computer interface, which frees them up to operate from the floor of the auditorium and not be confined to the second floor control room when performing sound checks and mic checks.

This new system will be installed within the next few weeks, in time for them to test run for the month of October and prepare for their play production on Nov 15 and 16. If you are not busy, maybe you can come out and hear this new system for yourself.

If your school is need of some sound system upgrades and you are not sure where to start or you feel you could benefit from some professional consultation or even a tune up, give us a call at: 888-346-0085 ext. 1 or send us an email at: dbrown@goodsoundstudio.com
