Free Solo Concert, Amelia Chan
Friday, June 13th at 7 p.m.
Amelia Chan, of the Montclaire String Quartet and West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, will be performing a solo concert at Café Cimino Country Inn. Works by composers including Bach, Telemann, Prokofiev, Ysaye, and Piazzolla.

Biography Information on Amelia Chan:
Amelia Chan currently holds the Mary Price Ratrie Concertmaster chair of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and is violinist of the Montclaire String Quartet.
Recent and upcoming highlights include playing Scheherazade under Gerard Schwartz; performing as orchestral soloist in John William's Three Pieces from Schindler's List; featured as soloist in Grant Cooper's orchestral work Appalachian Trail; a recital at the Eastern Mennonite University (VA); premiere of a work by composer John Beall with the Montclaire String Quartet; a residency at the Hong Kong International Youth Music Festival; a recital in South Dakota; and an upcoming solo recording project with Pittsburgh-based producer and sound designer Don Maue. Amelia has performed regularly with the New York Philharmonic. As concertmaster, she has worked with renowned conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas, Manfred Huss, Sergiu Commissiona, Theo Alcantara, Elizabeth Schulze, Anton Coppola, Grant Cooper, Zednek Macal, Graziella Contratto, Jorge Mester, and Julius Rudel. This summer, she will appear as guest concertmaster with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong in her native city.
Amelia's performances have been heard on WQXR, New York; WQED, Pittsburgh; West Virginia Public Radio; Scottish Radio, Scotland; and Radio 4, Hong Kong. She has been a recording artist for the Carnegie Hall website.
A devoted educator, Amelia Chan is on the faculty of the West Virginia State University, and has given master classes in universities and high schools in the US. With the Montclaire String Quartet, she performs age specific outreach programs for over 14,000 kids yearly. In her teaching, Amelia places strong emphasis on the awareness and anatomy of movement as related to music-making. She sees them as integral tools in developing playing technique and understanding musical ideas. She has extensive experience working with both professional and student musicians of different instrument focuses.
Amelia started learning the piano with her father John Chan. She then began her violin study at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She is a graduate of the Mannes College of Music and Manhattan School of Music. Her teachers have included Alice Waten, Albert Markov, Shirley Givens, Lisa Kim, Yoko Takebe, Sheryl Staples, Glenn Dicterow, and double-bassist Julius Levine.

West Virginia Day Festival
Saturday and Sunday, June 14th and 15th
Hillbilly Proud Productions and Shentel will host a weekend long celebration featuring Music, Motors, and Mountains; Saturday and Sunday, June 14th and 15th at Holly Gray Park, just 5 minutes from Flatwoods, WV.
The gates open at 9:00 a.m. both days. The first 500 cars each day will receive a door prize with further prizes awarded throughout the day. Food and vendors set up near the Family Area along with the Braxton County Animal Shelter, The Black Diamond Girl Scouts, an infant area, kids' activities, inflatables and more to keep everyone entertained.
Mud bog begins at noon with all classes of the speed pit & the 2' pit racing on Saturday. Sunday races begin at noon with the 2' pit open and racing in the deep pit.
Car show on Saturday featuring classics, muscles, and imports and on Father's Day a 4x4 Show with vehicles intended for racing and recreational use. Each day registration for the shows will end at 1:00 p.m. with door prizes and trophies awarded. Registration is free with gate admission.
The Schmitt's Saloon Musical Stage will host The Davisson Brothers both days of the festival. Saturday, The Davisson Brothers Band will take stage at 8:00 p.m. with The Mon Valley Pickers opening the show at 7:00 p.m. Sunday will be a special Father's Day Show beginning at 1:00 p.m. The show features the Davisson Brothers Band along with their father's band The Eddie Davisson Band, their nephew Landon McFadden and WVU football legend Owen Schmitt.
The West Virginia Day Festival is set at beautiful Holly Gray Park in Braxton County, West Virginia and is just 5 minutes from the I-79 Flatwoods exit with hotels, dining and more available nearby. Admission for adults is $12 a day with weekend packages available for $20. Kids under the age of 12 are free and military members can get ˝ off with presentation of an active ID.

That Dam Race 5k
Saturday, July 19th
Race begins at 8 a.m.
Registration begins at 7 a.m.
The 6th annual That Dam Race 5K walk/run is held in Sutton, West Virginia at the Sutton Dam. The course begins under the backdrop of the magnificent Sutton Dam at the Downstream Recreation Area. Participants then have a strenuous climb up hill to and then across the top of the dam. The course takes runners on a trip through the woods and down to the Elk River. Participants then hit the brick paved streets of historic downtown Sutton past many beautiful, historic buildings. The finish line is nearly in sight as participants head back up river with the dam in the distance. The race ends back at the Downstream Recreation Area where it began.
Come and run/walk one of the toughest and
most unique courses in the region!
The proceeds of this years Dam Race will go to
Braxton area Back Pack programs.

Elk River Canoe and Kayak Float!
Saturday, July 19th at 1 p.m.
Join us at the Sutton Dam in Sutton, WV for the second annual Elk River Float! The float will begin at the Sutton Dam and end at the Gassaway Dairy Queen. The float is about 5 miles long and will take 2-3 hours to complete. Microtel and Days Hotel are offering a discounted room rate to float participants. Details below. The float is free and open to the public.

Sutton Dam (Start)
From I-79, take Exit 62 Sutton/Gassaway. Turn left on route 4, approximately 2 miles into Sutton. Turn right onto 2nd Street, cross the bridge over the Elk River and turn left toward the Dam on Stonewall Rd. Keep left until you find yourself at the Sutton Dam. Unload boats at the round about. After unloading boats, park in near-by parking lot.
Gassaway Dairy Queen (Finish)
From Dam: When leaving Sutton, go west on Main Street. At the Y intersection go left toward Gassaway on Route 4. Stay on route 4 into Gassaway. Turn left onto Lee Street. Dairy Queen will be on your right. Park behind the Dairy Queen in the back lots close to the river. Overflow can park in any near-by public parking.
