Hello!

June is here and it will be gone as quick as it came. Although, it hasn't quite felt like it yet. Rain and storms have persisted well into June, keeping the waters high and the temperature low. Regardless, summer time activities are gearing up anyway and not wasting any time waiting for the weather to follow suit. So be sure to mark your calenders for a couple items in June and start planning for July!

Grand Opening of the Elk River Water Trail!

Help us celebrate the 150th birthday of West Virginia by coming out to the official grand opening of the Elk River Water Trail in Braxton County.

The grand opening will be held on June 22nd at 1:00 pm with a brief ceremony located at the Sutton Dam at the recreational area on the south side of the dam. Following the ceremony to commemorate all the work and planning that went into creating the water trail, there will be a Fun Float that will start at the Tail Waters of the dam and end at the Gassaway Dairy Queen, roughly a 5 mile float.

All participants in the float that exit the river at the Gassaway Dairy Queen will receive a voucher for a free mini blizzard of your choice (one topping).

The CVB would like to thank the other sponsors of the event: Gassaway Dairy Queen, Breakaway Inc. (Sutton),and the US Army Corps of Engineers. Without their help and contribution we would not be able to put on this event. On top of that, all three sponsors have gone above and beyond by helping make the Elk River Water Trail the success that it has become.

Participating in the Fun Float? This event is a bring-your-own-kayak-or-canoe event. No rentals or spares will be available and you will need to make your own arrangements as far as transportation. If the river is moving swiftly that day, the float should last around two ours. If the river is not moving quickly, as it often does in the summer, the float could take as long as 3 hours or so. Be sure to wear your life jacket and have a sound producing device on your vessel, sun block would not be a bad idea either.

The question is, does she have what it takes to become part of Escanaba's "royal" family?
