Have You Met Echo?

Commercial Fishing and Whaling Exhibit
Looking Toward Phase II
This new exhibit will bring shore whaling and the menhaden industry to the forefront. Additionally, this exhibit will demonstrate that Beaufort is a center for scientific research and the biological study of regional cetaceans (marine mammals).
Visitors have marveled at the huge sperm whale skeleton, named Echo, which went on display this past summer as Phase I.
Now it's time to move on to Phase II.
Please consider a contribution, if you have not done so already, to The Friends of the Museum to
help us build this new exhibit.
It is only through the kindness of our donors that we are able to help the museum build popular exhibits like Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge.
Please be as generous as you can, then join us when we open this new exhibit! You may use the Donate Button on our membership page online
or call 252-728-1638.
THANK YOU!

Volunteer News

The Best Job in Beaufort!
The best job in Beaufort is just an application away! North Carolina Maritime Museum volunteers have one of the best jobs, as long as you don't mind getting paid in smiles and thanks. This is one of the only jobs you will find today that can guarantee a raise in 'pay' for the best employees. As a Museum volunteer, you will have the opportunity to work with projects such as the Queen Anne's Revenge, the Watercraft Center, Schools and Group programs, Wooden Boat Show and many more. If those opportunities aren't enough, the Museum also offers a number of "Volunteers Only" programs such as our annual volunteer luncheon, ice cream social, field trips and behind the scenes looks at the Museum's projects and exhibits.
We welcome you to join our Museum family and help keep the North Carolina Maritime Museum one of the best attractions in the state! Whether getting out and meeting new people is your interest or sharing your craft with another, we have a place for you.

Volunteer Coordinator, Christine Brin at

Dear Friends,
You are receiving this email because you are a valued museum supporter - Thank You!
March can be an iffy month weather wise - There are daffodils in the yard so it looks like spring but will we still get a late snow? Either way warm weather is on the way! With warm weather comes the Museum's busy season with so many things to do, but you don't have to wait until summer for a good time at the Museum.
March offers a full calendar of events. This month you can learn about archeological excavations at the ancient port of Ephesus; visit our state port; or learn how to build your own boat - either in a bottle or life-sized! There's plenty to keep you busy while we wait for summer.
Our overflowing monthly schedule of exhibits, programs, workshops and events are possible due to the ongoing help of members of The Friends of the Museum. We are bigger and better because of all you do. Many thanks for your contributions on behalf of our Museum.
Hope to see you soon!

Ancient Ephesus Lecture

Archaeological Excavations at Ancient Ephesus
March 3, 3:00 p.m.
On the shores of the Aegean Sea, the ancient harbor of Ephesus was one of the twelve ancient cities of the Ionian League. The site is home to numerous ruins including the tomb of Cleopatra's murdered sister, the Basilica of St. John, the Library of Celsus and the Temple of Artemis - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The former harbor has been rendered obsolete by river silting, but Ephesus has since become a significant archaeological site and source of cultural heritage. Dr. Hilke Thur has spent the majority of her career using her training in both architecture and archaeology to understand these ruins. Please join us to hear stories and research from her work at the ancient sites.Make reservations by calling 252-728-7317.
