UPDATE
-Attention Motorists -

The full closure of the Route 3 bridge eastbound in East Rutherford, which was to start Saturday night, has been canceled due to weekend forecasts predicting cold weather and heavy winds, state transportation officials said Friday.

The project is needed to repair cracks to the steel beams that carry the bridge over the Hackensack River.

After three weeks of repair work that closed the right lane to all traffic and the left lane to semis, the state Department of Transportation had planned to finish the work this weekend by shutting down all lanes of the eastbound bridge from 10 p.m. Saturday through 10 p.m. Sunday. A separate bridge carries traffic westbound.

But extreme weather predicted for this weekend is forcing the department to postpone the work. Temperatures will drop to around 13 degrees Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.

With 25 mile-an-hour winds, it will feel more like zero. There is also the possibility of one to three inches of snow.

Working on a bridge in such weather would risk "creating extremely hazardous conditions for work crews," said Kevin Israel, a spokesman for the transportation department.

The work has not yet been rescheduled.
