Stay In The Know
Before you hit the road, check the radio, tv or online weather reports to help avoid congestion and crashes.
Charge!
Cold weather is hard on batteries. At 0 degrees a car's battery loses about 60% of its strength. Even at 32 degrees, it is 35% weaker than normal. Test your battery to be sure you're not left in the cold.
Get A Grip!
Check the tread on your tires to be sure they aren't worn (1/16 inch minimum). Sufficient tread depth allows water to escape and improves traction. Be sure to keep tires at the proper pressure.
Slippery When Wet
In temperatures around 32 degrees, a thin layer of water can cover ice on the road making it even more slippery.Slow down and use extra caution when passing other vehicles in icy conditions.
Air It Out
Don't let frigid temperatures tempt you to start your car in a closed garage or idle your car for long periods with your windows closed. Carbon monoxide in exhaust fumes is almost impossible to detect and can be fatal when breathed in a confined area.
See And Be Seen
Use and ice scraper, brush or spray bottle with 50% water and 50% white vinegar to clear off snow covered windows, mirrors and lights. Make sure your headlights and tail lights are in working order as well. NJ State law requires you to use your headlights whenever you are using your windshield wipers.
