Industry News
Reuters.  A large, long term study has found that taking fertility drugs does not increase a woman's chance of developing breast cancer unless used for prolonged periods of time.  This had been a concern due to women being exposed to higher levels of estrogen and increased ovulation.  The study recommended continued monitoring of women using fertility drugs though, because the women in the study were still fairly young.  (Seaman, 4/3)  Full Story

Fox News.  The popular diet supplement OxyElite Pro has been linked to 97 cases of hepatitus.  With over 47 hospitalizations, 3 people needed liver transplants and 1 person died.  The FDA didn't learn of the cases until doctors in Hawaii started reporting an increase in liver illnesses.  The case is prompting stronger control of supplements.  (Rettner, 4/3)    Full Story

Kaiser Health News.  The Affordable Care Act has resulted in 23 new health insurance companies.  The new companies are nonprofit, member-owned cooperatives.  Some states are seeing the co-ops dominating the market, gaining 80% of all enrollees.  (Whitney, 4/2)   Full Story

Bloomberg.   More than 1M people signed up for Obamacare in the last 5 days before the March 31 deadline, adding to the total enrollment of 7.1M people.  Early indications are that many of the recent people to sign up are young minorities, which is good news and a sign that many of them will be healthy - a vital part of keeping the insurance affordable.  (Wayne, Pettypiece, 4/2)  Full Story
