World Tuberculosis Day: March 24

World TB Day, falling on March 24 each year, is designed to build public awareness that tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of nearly 1.5M people each year, mostly in developing countries. It commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. At the time of Koch's announcement in Berlin, TB was raging through Europe and the Americas, causing the death of 1 out of every 7 people. Koch's discovery opened the way towards diagnosing and curing TB.

HealthDay.  Though not yet approved by the FDA, a new at-home stool test has been developed to screen for colorectal cancer.  The test checks for blood and abnormal DNA, with 92% accuracy.  (Mozes, 3/19)    Full Story

Reuters.  The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning regarding multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (TB).  Fewer than 1 in 4 people with TB are diagnosed, and many of those who are, are being given the wrong dosage or not finishing their prescription.  (Kelland, 3/20)   Full Story

Bloomberg.  J&J has won an appeal to have $1.2B in fines overturned.  The Arkansas Supreme Court has determined that the wrong law was used in fining the drugmaker.  J&J was initially charged for making misleading claims about its drug Risperdal.    (Feeley, 3/20)   Full Story 

Kaiser Health News.  The US Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments on March 25 regarding "whether privately owned businesses can be hit with crippling fines of $100 a day per worker if their devoutly Christian owners refuse on religious grounds to include in their health plans four contraceptive methods that they equate with abortion."  (Taylor, 3/20)    Full Story
