Colorectal Cancer Prevention Month

From PreventCancer.org:

Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon or rectum. It's as common in women as it is in men. This year, over 136,830 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and an estimated 50,310 will die of the disease. With certain types of screening, this cancer may be prevented by removing polyps (grape-like growths on the wall of the intestine) before they become cancerous. Several screening tests detect colorectal cancer early, when it can be more easily and successfully treated.

Risk factors include:

  • People age 50 and older
  • People who smoke
  • People who are overweight or obese
  • People who aren't physically active
  • People who drink alcohol in excess, especially men
  • People who eat a lot of red or processed meat
  • People with personal histories of inflammatory bowel disease
  • People with family histories of inherited colorectal cancer

News You Can Use
Fox News.   Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the US.  As the brain begins to dysfunction, 1/3 of patients die from pneumonia as the brain becomes less adept at controlling eating and breathing.  Nearly another 1/3 of patients will die from heart failure as the brain can no longer effectively control the body's organs, including the heart.  This is becoming a more important issue as the population of the US ages.  (Kwan, 3/6)  Full Story

HealthDay.  A report from Finland has found that poor fitness in middle age is linked to a higher risk for dementia.  The study proved a correlation and not a causation, because "a low level of physical fitness may be associated with a sedentary lifestyle, poor mental health, isolation, a lack of education, being overweight and smoking."   These factors have also been linked to dementia.  (3/5)  Full Story

Industry News
HealthDay.  Scientists have found that patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can reduce their incidence of hospitalizations by walking 2 miles a day.  Patients with moderate or high physical activity were hospitalized 53% as often as patients who didn't exercise.  About 134K Americans die each year from COPD.  (Salamon, 3/5)    Full Story

CNN.  A new hydrocodone-based drug, Zohydro, has been approved by the FDA.  Released to help people with chronic pain, Zohydro may be 5 times stronger than what is currently on the market.  Advocates of the drug say that people in pain will benefit from it, while proponents cite the 16,651 opioid deaths in 2010 alone, and a concern for abuse.  (Smith, 2/26)   Full Story

Health Policy Matters
Kaiser Health News.  The Obama administration has made alterations to the Health Law.  Changes include allowing consumers with health insurance that doesn't meet current standards to keep that insurance for an additional 2 years, and also to extend the enrollment period for 2015 by 1 month.  For the full list, click into the article.  (Carey, 3/6)   Full Story

Reuters.  The House of Representatives has voted to delay the tax penalty by 1 year for any American without health insurance.  The bill is unlikely to get passed in the Senate, and if it does it is likely the White House will veto it.  (Morgan, Ferraro, 3/5)    Full Story
