News You Can Use
HealthDay.   According to a new study, the average obese woman gets just one hour of vigorous exercise a year.  The average obese man will get 3.6 hours of exercise per year.  As little as 2.5 hours of exercise a week can stop weight gain and improve health.  (Dotinga, 2/20)  Full Story    
 
Reuters.  A study of adults over the age of 50 in the UK has linked poor sleep to widespread pain.  People who had anxiety, physical health or cognitive problems and osteoarthritis prior to the study were also at a higher risk of developing widespread pain.  (Jegtvig, 2/19)   Full Story

Fox News.  "A technique to genetically modify a patient's own immune cells eradicated tumors in 14 of 16 patients with advanced leukemia-at least for a time-in a study that adds to growing enthusiasm for efforts to enlist the body's immune system in the fight against cancer."  The patients all had acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and had relapsed after standard therapy.  (2/20)    Full Story

The New York Times.  In California, over 838K participants have signed up for health insurance under the new exchange.  Lagging behind, however, is the Latino population.  About a quarter of California's enrollees have been young adults.  (Lovett, 2/19)     Full Story 

Kaiser Health News.  CIVCH, a non-profit in Colorado, is working hard to make health care prices more transparent.  Right now, it's hard to shop around to compare costs for services such as a colonoscopy.  Patients can't easily find pricing, and hospitals don't know what other hospitals are charging.  CIVCH is working with insurance groups to build lists that compare what different costs are being paid at separate hospitals.  (Whitney, 2/19)  Full Story
