State of the Union and Health Care

At the State of the Union address on Tuesday, President Obama announced that 9M Americans have enrolled in the health insurance exchanges.  He also used his speech to discuss highlights of the Affordable Care Act and to encourage more people to sign up by March 31.

HealthDay.  A recent study has found that individuals with diabetes are more likely to be hospitalized due to the flu.  The increased risk is only 6%, but experts say it is enough that people with diabetes should get the flu shot if they haven't already. (Reinberg, 1/24) Full Story

Reuters.  Oramed Pharmaceuticals out of Israel has just completed a small mid-stage test in developing the world's first insulin pill.  The company has competition from Novo Nordisk out of Denmark, who is also hoping to be the first to create an insulin pill.  (Scheer, 1/30)  Full Story

Time.  According to this article, "Exposure to the banned pesticide DDT may contribute to the onset of Alzheimer's disease in adults."  The study found that the effect of DDT might be as strong as the genetic risk factor that some people have that predisposes them to the disease.   (Sifferlin, 1/28)  Full Story

 


USA Today.  Experts have released new guidelines on how to treat patients with Hepatitis C due to quickly changing treatment options.  New medications with fewer side affects have been released, and the FDA is considering others.  Hepatitis C is the nation's leading cause of liver cancer and liver transplants.  (Painter, 1/29)   Full Story
