Time.  The FDA is once again studying the caramel coloring used in soft drinks.  This comes in response to Consumer Reports finding varying levels of an impurity formed in the caramel coloring at low levels during the manufacturing process.  (Jalonick, 1/23) Full Story

HealthDay.  Health officials reported a 2% decline in cesarean deliveries for first-time mothers from 2009-2012.  Doctors have praised this as progress, as the number has stopped climbing and started dropping.  Vaginal deliveries are considered lower-risk, and are preferred when there is a choice in the method of delivery.  (1/23)    Full Story   

HealthDay.  The guidelines for autism have become stricter, meaning that the number of children diagnosed as autistic will now decrease.  Children who were initially diagnosed as on the autism spectrum, but no longer meeting the guidelines, may receive a new diagnosis.  (Goodman, 1/22)    Full Story

Bloomberg.  The percentage of uninsured US adults has fallen from 17.3% in December to 16.1% this January.  The people benefiting most so far appear to be those who are unemployed.  (Chen, 1/23)  Full Story

 


Reuters.  6.3M Americans were deemed eligible for Medicaid or CHIP since the launch of President Barack Obama's health care law, federal officials reported on Wednesday. These programs are designed for the poor, and generally charge zero premiums.  (1/22)   Full Story
