National Drug Facts Week
Jan. 27 - Feb. 2 

With National Drug Facts Week beginning January 27, there is a new game that teachers and parents can use to teach teens about prescription drug abuse.  

 

The online game "Trauma" targets students from middle school to college and allows them to learn by doing. By conducting medical exams and working with the emergency room physician and pharmacist to discover what kind of trauma occurred, students will learn how the abuse of prescription medications played a role in a car accident involving two high school students.

Time.  Researchers have found that a natural hormone can block the high that people receive from marijuana.  The hormone, pregnenolone, is already marketed as an anti-aging supplement.  While the discovery may lead to new studies, it may not be helpful for medical uses because the hormone also blocks THC's pain relieving activities.  (Szalavitz, 1/3)    Full Story

Kaiser Health News.  Anti-poverty agencies across the US remain fearful that for some Americans, health insurance may still be too costly even under the Affordable Care Act.  Available for people who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid and too little to afford insurance on the state exchanges is the Basic Health Program, but the agencies fear that even that program may not be enough.  (Ollove, 1/14)  Full Story
