A Good Reason to Head to the Gym 
  
Are you looking for motivation to stick to your workout routine this winter?  A study that began in 1979 has revealed that exercise was the single biggest influence in reducing a person's chances of developing dementia.     

Other factors that were shown to play a role in avoiding disease were: regular exercise, not smoking, low body weight, healthy diet, and low alcohol intake.

CNN.  Researchers at Kaiser Permanente have found that patients who use heartburn drugs are at a higher risk of becoming deficient in vitamin B12.  Patients who took drugs such as Prilosec and Nexium were 65% more likely to be deficient when compared to other patients not on the drugs, and the risk of deficiency rose along with the dosage level.  (12/11)  Full Story    

Time.  A study involving 4K postmenopausal women with a high risk of breast cancer found that taking the drug anastrozole cut their chances of developing the disease by 53%.  The side effects of anastrozole were only slightly higher than those caused by the placebo. (Sifferlin, 12/12)  Full Story

Reuters.  Worldwide, deaths resulting from cancer rose 8% since 2008, and breast cancer deaths rose 14% - killing 522K women.  Rates of cancer are highest in developed countries, while death rates are relatively higher in less developed areas.   (Kelland, 12/12)   Full Story

Fox News.   Can worms be used to treat autism?  Showing a possible link to inflammation, a study found that when an adult with autism was given a pill containing worm eggs, the adult showed improvement in three different scales that measured rigidity, flexibility or insistence on sameness - all traits linked to autism.  (Grush, 12/12)    Full Story

Health Policy Matters

Bloomberg.  The federal government's Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan was due to expire on Dec. 31, but Americans using the plan now have another month before the program ends.  The individuals using the Plan are able to join in the federal health exchange.  (Wayne, 12/12)    Full Story
