Member-only Webinars Nov. 25, 26

National CooperativeRx will be hosting a 30-minute webinar on Monday, Nov. 25 at 12:00 PM CST and again on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 2:00 PM CST.  The webinar will briefly review contract changes taking place 1/1/2014, potential plan changes that members may want to consider for 3/1/2014, health care reform and how it is impacting your pharmacy benefits, and other great pieces of information.  The webinar agenda is as follows:

News You Can Use
Time.  Scientists at Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women's Hospital found that women who ate a Mediterranean diet were healthier than women who didn't.  The healthiest women, who were able to avoid 11 chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, or Parkinson's, had consistently stuck with a Mediterranean diet throughout most of the 15 year study period.  (Sifferlin, 11/4)  Full Story

HealthDay According to a new study, vegetable protein may help people with kidney disease to live longer.  Although more research is needed, it was found that for each 10-gram rise in vegetable protein intake per day, the patients had a 14% lower risk of dying by the end of 2006.  Vegetable protein includes  beans, nuts and whole grains - all of which beat animal protein at lowering blood toxin production.  (11/7)    Full Story

Reuters.  Agenus has stated its experimental genital herpes vaccine reduced the rate at which patients released the virus, reducing the likelihood of infecting others. This has increased its shares by 32%.  (Dey, 11/7)  Full Story

Bloomberg.  Newly approved Gazyva, from Roche, helped patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia live almost a year longer without their disease progressing. The study compared Gazyva to Rituxan, the current best-seller for the disease.  (Tirrell, 11/7)  Full Story

Health Policy Matters

Time.  The FDA may ban partially hydrogenated fats and oils (trans fat) from baked and fried foods. On Thursday, the Administration determined that trans fats are not healthy for consumption.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say about 5K Americans die each year due to heart disease linked to artificial trans fats. (Rayman, 11/7) Full Story

  


HealthDay.  Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has stated that the administration intends to release health care marketplace enrollment figures next week. While admitting that HealthCare.gov has hundreds of needed fixes, Sebelius doesn't believe a health care reform delay is necessary.  (Pallarito, 11/6)   Full Story
