Health Exchange Awareness Advertising

The Health Insurance Marketplace is up and looks ready to begin accepting applications starting October 1.  The site will be used to fill out an application and see plan choices.  Coverage begins as early as January 1, 2014.  


16 states and the District of Columbia have opted to run their own online health insurance marketplaces.  To see their individual sites, click into the link below.  Our personal favorite marketing technique?  Minnesota's use of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox to promote MNsure.

News You Can Use
Health DayA new study comparing the kidney cancer drugs pazopanib and sunitinib found that both drugs were equally effective.  However, pazopanib (Votrient) was found to have milder side effects. Both of the drugs cost the same at around $6,500 per month.  (Reinberg, 8/22)  Full Story

Daily Mail.  A less expensive form of fertility treatment may soon be available.  Originally created for developing countries, the new IVF treatment may be simpler, significantly less expensive, and more successful than current methods.  (Reilly, 8/22)  Full Story

Pharmalot.  Children who are prescribed antipsychotics are faced with 3 times the risk of developing type 2 diabetes within the first year than if they were prescribed a different type of medication for their disorder.  Antipsychotics were originally intended for schizophrenia, but are now also prescribed for bipolar disorder, ADHD and mood disorders.  (Silverman, 8/22)  Full Story

Reuters. Initial studies suggest that pregnant women who take probiotics may be protecting their unborn children from allergies.  Babies who were exposed to probiotics in the womb and received supplements after birth had a 12% lower risk of allergies in the following months and years than kids in comparison groups.   (Doyle, 8/22)  Full Story

Health Policy Matters
BloombergUPS will be ending health care coverage for working spouses of white-collar employees, adding up to around 15K spouses.  Spouses who don't work or lack employer-provided benefits will still be eligible.   (Credeur, Nussbaum, 8/22) Full Story

CNN.  "San Francisco on Wednesday threatened to sue Nevada over the practice of 'patient dumping,' in which the state allegedly sent hundreds of indigent mentally ill patients on one-way trips to California."  Nevada might avoid the lawsuit if the state pays back the local governments in California and ends the busing practice.  (Gray, 8/21)  Full Story
