The Health Insurance Marketplace is up and looking ready to begin accepting applications starting October 1, 2013.  The site will be used to fill out an application and see plan choices.  Coverage begins as early as January 1, 2014.

ReutersAccording to a Reuters poll, 1 in 10 Americans admit taking a prescription drug they have not been prescribed, and a quarter of those people have used them just to get high.  Prescription drug misuse has reached epidemic levels and it is now the second most abused category of drugs in the US, after marijuana(Dunsmuir, 8/15)  Full Story

CNN.  Researchers have found that women who eat fatty fish at least once per week are 50% less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than their peers.  Taking fish oil supplements instead of eating fish did not appear to help prevent rheumatoid arthritis, but that may be due to the limits of the study.  (Wade, 8/12)  Full Story

Fox News.  Researchers in Britain have made breakthroughs in analyzing genes linked to cancer.  They laid out the first comprehensive map of mutational processes behind the development of tumors - work that should in the future lead to better ways to treat and prevent a wide range of cancers.  (8/14)  Full Story

The New York TimesLast month, 2 of the country's largest medical organizations identified the procedure used to put in a heart stent as one of five highly overused medical interventions.  Although stents can be life-saving, studies show the procedure continues to be overused. Health Policy Matters
Health Day.  The Obama administration said Thursday that it has given $67M in grants to 105 community groups to help the uninsured choose and sign up for coverage when new health insurance marketplaces kick in this fall.  (8/15) Full Story

Bloomberg.  During the opening session of a 4 day gathering of the Republican National Committee in Boston, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich rebuked his fellow Republicans for not being more positive and failing to offer better alternatives to the health-care measure steered into law by President Barack Obama.  Obama aimed a similar criticism last week at Republicans.
