According to the CDC:
  • More than 180,000 deaths from injury each year (1 person every 3 minutes)
  • Leading cause of death for people ages 1-44 in the US 
  • An estimated 2.5M people hospitalized with injury each year
  • An estimated 31.6M people treated in Emergency Department for injury each year
  • An estimated $465B annually in medical costs and lost productivity

HealthDayFor parents concerned that their children's ADHD medication will raise their child's risk of drug abuse in adulthood, they can rest a little easier.  A new study shows that "on average, children who received stimulant medication treatment for ADHD are at no differential risk for these substance outcomes than their counterparts who did not receive medication treatment."  (Reinberg, 5/29)  Full Story

Time.  Pesticides are getting more bad press.  Already linked to a lower IQ and allergies, a recent publication states that pesticide exposure is now linked to an increased risk of developing Parkinson's, a neurological disease. (Sifferlin, 5/28)  Full Story

HealthDay.  The Affordable Care Act has covered 3.1M young adults under their parents' health insurance plans, protecting them from $147M in hospital bills during 2011 alone.  The study focused on injuries so severe that the young adult patients would likely have required care regardless of their insurance status. Health Policy Matters
Forbes.  Covered Care - California's healthcare exchange - will serve the largest population of insured citizens in the nation.  Last week Covered Care unveiled its pricing. The most affordable "silver plan" covers 70% of a participants' health costs and will cost an individual $276 per month.  2.6M Californians on the plan will pay less due to federal subsidies.  (Ungar, 5/24) Full Story
 

BloombergAccording to Harvard University researchers, immigrants to the US contributed $115.2B more to Medicare than they withdrew from it over the past decade.  This suggests that immigrants (mainly without citizenship) help fund Medicare versus overburdening it.  (Cortez, 5/29)  Full Story
