New York Times. Cholesterol-lowering statins are the most prescribed drug worldwide, but a new study may show some drawbacks of taking the medication. Researchers from the University of Missouri have found that taking a statin may block some of the fitness benefits of exercise, one of the surest ways to improve health. (Reynolds, 5/22) Full Story

HealthDay. The American Cancer Society is celebrating 100 years of fighting cancer. According to the article "Since 1913, the cancer society has played a role in nearly every major cancer research breakthrough... the group reported a 20 percent drop in cancer death rates since the 1990s, which amounts to more than one million cancer deaths avoided in that time period." Reuters. In a new study regarding adherence, it was found that patients with online access to their pharmacist were better at adhering to their blood pressure medication than patients who didn't have the same access. It was estimated that online access to a pharmacist cost around $400 per patient, but that the results in decreased blood pressure may be worth it. (Pittman, 5/22) Full Story

Drug Channels. How did the pharmaceutical industry change in 2012?
- Total retail prescription growth was 1.2% in 2012, a rebound from 2011's especially weak growth of 0.3%.
- For the first time in nine years, chains lost market share, as they grew more slowly than the overall industry.
- Supermarkets staged an unexpected comeback, outpacing all other dispensing formats.

Kaiser Health News. High-deductible health care plans are becoming more popular, and as they do, a new form of high-deductibles is emerging. Called deductible-credit plans, the deductible diminishes year by year for policyholders who don't spend a lot on health care. (Andrews, 5/21) Full Story

Fox News. The Institute of Medicine is recommending that schools provide the nation's children with 60 minutes of exercise each day, and make physical education a core subject. Since the passage of the No Child Left Behind law in 2001, 44% of school administers have cut PE classes, art classes, and recess. (5/23) Full Story
