HealthDayA new antibiotic-resistant bacteria is emerging, called Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE).  The bacteria kills half of the people it infects, and there isn't currently any way to treat it.  CRE bacteria can transfer their antibiotic resistance to other bacteria of the same type.  Currently it is most commonly found in hospitals, and hospitals are being recommended various ways to contain it.   (Reinberg, 3/5)  Full Story

Reuter.   Has a US doctor found a cure for babies born with HIV?  Maybe.  After putting a baby on the full treatment regimen of three potent drugs when she was just 30 hours old, a doctor may have cured the child of HIV.  Now 30 months old, the baby was treated for the first 18 months of her life, and now the virus is undetectable.  The child remains off medication and is doing well.  (Le Coz, Steenhuysen, 3/6)  Full Story

HealthDay.  New research suggests that older patients receiving steroid injections for degeneration in their lower spine may end up worse than if they had skipped the shot.  Patients who skipped the steroids and went straight to surgery seemed to fare better.  (Norton, 3/7)   Full Story    

 

ReutersThe Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released the results of a new study that shows Americans are consuming fewer calories, yet the obesity rate continues to grow.  Some theories for this are given, such as it will take time for people consuming fewer calories to lose weight, or people are misreporting what they're eating due to the stigmas behind eating junk food.  (Doyle, 3/6)  Full Story

Drug Channels.  In 2012, drugstore sales dropped for the first time in history.  Spending on traditional drugs also dropped for the first time last year.  The substitution of brand-name drugs for generic drugs is the biggest factor behind pharmacies' revenue slowdown.  (Fein, 3/7)  Full Story  

Time.  Researchers may be able to use internet searches to discover unreported side effects for common drugs.  Using 6M internet-using volunteers, researchers were able to expose previously unreported interactions between 2 commonly prescribed drugs - paroxetine, an anti-depressant, and pravastatin, a statin that lowers cholesterol. The researchers found that hyperglycemia is a side effect of using the 2 drugs together. (Sifferlin, 3/7)   Full Story
