How well did you sleep last night? On a related note, how well did you eat yesterday? Researchers have found that people have very distinct diet patterns that correlate with the sleep category they fall into. For example, short sleepers (those who sleep 5-6 hours a night) tend to consume the most calories. They normally eat more green, leafy vegetables but consume less vitamin C, tap water and selenium (found in nuts, meat and shellfish).

HealthDay. Taking zinc helps to strengthen the immune system, and a new study is looking into the mineral to see why. Zinc can be found naturally in red meat, beans, nuts, and other food sources, yet 40% of elderly US citizens are zinc deficient. Taking supplements may help them fight infections. (2/7) Full Story

Time. A recent study suggests that baby boomers will not be healthier than the generation before them. Although they have the longest life expectancy, they are experiencing higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol. (Park, 2/5) Full Story

Reuters. The number of US citizens living with Alzheimer's is expected to reach 13.8M by 2050 - triple the number of citizens living with the disease today. Drugs. Eli Lilly has halted a study of its rheumatoid arthritis drug during the clinical phase. The study was stopped because the drug wasn't shown to be effective, not due to safety concerns. The company will continue to study the drug for other disorders. (2/7) Full Story

CNN. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has stated that they do not support the new proposal by the Obama administration regarding birth control. The administration has proposed that religious groups will not be required to cover birth control, but that people with health insurance through religious groups may obtain it free of charge under separate health policies. Kaiser Health News. The federal health law implements many new health insurance rules, such as older individual's health insurance coverage cannot be more than three times the cost of a younger individual's. This will result in higher premiums for younger individuals, yet they will receive a tax credit that caps their premium obligation as a percentage of their income. (Appleby, 2/6) Full Story
