Today, Friday, February 1, is 'National Wear Red Day' for Women's Heart Health. 
  • One woman dies from heart disease each minute.
  • Far from being solely a "man's disease," female deaths from heart disease have exceeded the death toll for men since 1984.
  • One in every 31 women will die from breast cancer, while one in every three women will lose their life to heart disease.
  • Nine out of 10 women now have one or more risk factors for heart disease.

Reuters2.7M Americans have an irregular heart rhythm, and a new study has shown that yoga classes might help.  During a controlled study, yoga classes led to fewer heart quiver episodes, lower anxiety, and lower average heart rate.  (Pittman, 1/30)  Full Story

HealthDay.  After being prescribed dopamine-enhancing medication, some Parkinson's patients are discovering an artistic side.  These positive results of the drugs seem to be less common than some negative results, though, with 1 in 5 experiencing problems with impulse-control (such as gambling).  (Norton, 1/31)   Full Story    

 

Industry News
Bloomberg.  Pfizer's Zoetis Inc. is seeking to sell 86.1 million shares, which would make it the biggest IPO since Facebook.  Zoetis would be the largest public company of its kind, while focused solely on medicines for animals.  (Spears, Armstrong, 1/30)  Full Story

Time.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel voted to impose stricter controls on prescriptions for drugs like Vicodin, which contain the opioid pain reliever hydrocodone. Health Policy Matters

New York Times.  The IRS has determined that it will base its decision on whether or not an employers' insurance offering is 'affordable' by examining what the individual insurance costs, not the cost of insuring the entire family.  Employer-sponsored insurance will be considered affordable if the cost of individual insurance is under 9.5% of the employee's income.  (Pear, 1/30)   Full Story    

 

Drugs. In 2012, branded drug firms increased the number of pay-for-delay settlements from the year before.  In 2011 the number of settlements was 28, and that number rose to 40 last year.  Almost half of the settlements saw the brand drug manufacturer promising not to create a generic equivalent of the brand drug, allowing the generic manufacturer greater share of the potential market.  (1/30)  Full Story
