Both meetings are free to members, with nationally recognized experts lined up to speak on a range of topics. The central theme is "Navigating Health Care Consumerism in 2013," and we hope you're able to attend. Official invitations will go out 6 weeks before the events.

HealthDay. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is meeting to discuss prescription painkillers, and whether there should be tighter restrictions on the drugs. Prescription painkillers have received a lot of bad press lately due to their high rate of abuse, but some people fear that tighter restrictions will make it harder for the people who need the drugs to receive them. Time. In a study of 27 migraine sufferers, patients were subjected to bright lights and exercise to determine what role the actions had in triggering migraines. It was found that light wasn't as big of a trigger as the sufferers previously thought. Stress seemed to play more of a role in whether the patients would get a migraine. (Feeney, 1/24) Full Story

Reuters. Biogen has completed a late-stage study of a multiple sclerosis treatment, saying the drug was safe and effective. The drug, Peg-Avonex, is meant to last longer in the body to reduce the dosing schedule to every 2 or 4 weeks. Patients in the trial experienced fewer remissions annually and slower progression of disability. (Humber, 1/24) Full Story

Bloomberg. Scientists at Harvard Medical School have spotted DNA mutations linked to a common brain tumor that more often affects women, in a study that may pave the way for treating the sometimes fatal disease with drugs targeting genes that spur its growth. (Langreth, 1/24) Full Story

Kaiser Health News. Hospices across the nation are experiencing stricter regulations as Medicare cracks down on those that are admitting patients with longer than 6 months to live. This article examines how admitting patients who aren't close enough to dying is raising the overall cost of health care, and the ethical dilemma of providing good care that extends life past the expected 6 months. Kaiser Health News. Conflicts are arising among Republicans as some of them begin to embrace parts of the Affordable Care Act, while other Republicans remain strongly opposed. In Mississippi Gov. Bryant is in a disagreement with Insurance Commissioner Chaney. Mr. Chaney wants to implement the online health insurance marketplace, while the governor is attempting to block it. Gov.
