Use January to Spread Cervical Health Awareness   

  

HPV (human papillomavirus) is a major cause of cervical cancer.  20M Americans have HPV, but chances of contracting the STD can now be reduced with the HPV vaccine.

One way to spread awareness is to let people know that the health care reform law covers well-woman visits and cervical cancer screening. This means that, depending on their insurance, women can get these services at no cost to them.  For more information or for educational tools, click here.

HealthDay.  The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new flu vaccine.  The new vaccine, Flublok, can be made in larger quantities because it is made up with an "insect virus (baculovirus) expression system and recombinant DNA technology" instead of an actual flu virus and eggs. The New York TimesWhen it comes to severe intestinal infections, antibiotics can't always help.  Sometimes, antibiotics can even play a part in developing the infection.  Clostridium difficile bacteria, or C. difficile, is the cause of 14,000 US deaths each year.  When antibiotics don't help, physicians are beginning to turn to a different form of treatment: human feces transplants.  Transplanting healthy feces from another person into the patient has shown to cure 15 in 16 cases.  (Grady, 1/16)  Full Story

Kaiser Health NewsPatients' share of health spending is shrinking, with consumers paying 27.7% of the $2.7T health bill in 2011.  Although their overall costs are rising, the percentage of the bill has fallen from 30% in 2000.  One of the reasons that health spending by consumers has remained in check is due to patents expiring on expensive, common pharmaceutical drugs.
