HealthDay. One of the drugs experiencing a shortage fairly recently was Mechlorethamine, a drug used to treat childhood leukemia. While doctors had thought that a replacement drug would work just as well, new statistics show that 2-year remission rates dropped from 88% down to 75% after the switch. (Gordon, 12/27) Full story

Reuters. Over the past decade, the number of preschoolers who are lower-income and obese has dropped modestly. Two possible contributors are higher rates of breastfeeding and more public education on the benefits of physical activity. (Pittman, 12/25) Full story

American Medical News. In parts of the South, a stigma surrounding AIDS remains a big problem. It is leading to a lack of understanding and fewer people being tested, along with less timely medical care and less emotional support. The incidence of HIV continues to rise in some areas such as Florida. An estimated 1.2M Americans are living with HIV, and 20% don't know they have it. (Moyer, 12/3) Full Story

HealthDay. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has reported that flu season is in full swing, with 29 states experiencing flu activity. 12 states are reporting high levels of flu activity. Thousands of people die and hundreds of thousands are hospitalized each year due to the flu. (Reinberg, 12/21) Full Story

Reuters. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will not block the requirement that companies provide insurance coverage for contraceptives. Hobby Lobby Stores Inc had asked not to be required to cover contraceptives while the company challenges the requirement in court. The company claims that the contraceptives provision violates the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. (Stempel, 12/26) Full Story
