Black Friday    

 

With the holidays officially in full swing, one of the biggest cooking days of the year took place yesterday.  Many of us are nowhere near done, though, with many parties and celebrations still to come.  While we're busy creating delicious meals, it's good to remember how healthy food can contribute to our overall well-being.

Time.  Jon Bon Jovi's daughter Stephanie was recently rushed to the hospital with a heroin overdose, and then charged with possession.  The charges were later dropped due to the Good Samaritan Law in that state, which allows victims and those around them to contact help without fear of arrest.  The fact that she was charged in the first place, though, highlights some problems with the law.  This article also discusses distribution of the anti-overdose medication naloxone.  (Szalavitz, 11/16)   Full story

Wisconsin State JournalMadison, Wisconsin, is one of the latest cities to start taking food seriously.  With the knowledge that healthy food is linked to a healthy population, Madison has created a Food Policy Council.  The purpose of the Council is to understand the local food distribution system, and to make recommendations to the mayor and city council.   (Worland, 11/18)  Full Story

Reuters.  A recent study looked at men with erectile dysfunction who took Viagra while also using a testosterone gel.  The study found that the testosterone had no effect on the dysfunction.  (Pittman, 11/19)  Full Story

Health Policy Matters
Kaiser Health NewsThe Obama administration has extended the date for states to decide whether to build online health insurance markets, or to partner with the federal government.  The new date is December 14.  This link also directs you to a map of the US, showing which states are creating their own market and which are working with the federal government.   (Galewitz, 11/15) Full Story
