Cold Weather Comfort Food Cravings? 

 

Do you personally start craving comfort foods when the weather gets cold?  Many people reach for macaroni and cheese, potatoes, and other high calorie, starchy foods this time of year.

 

Some reasons behind this are offered by Dr. Melina Jampolis: 
*  Genetic tendency towards higher calorie foods because it used to be scarce during the winter 
*  People may be depressed or anxious during the winter, and using food to self-medicate 
*  Cool salads simply aren't as warming as steaming stew or hot mashed potatoes

The New York Times.  Getting patients to adhere to their prescription drugs can sometimes be a difficult task, even when they have a chronic condition.  A new report shows that approximately half of HIV positive patients will skip their antiretroviral therapy medication while drinking.  Reasons behind this are mainly forgetfulness and the misconception that alcohol and the drugs can be toxic.  Patients skipping medication have higher viral loads. Health.  Men who are at risk for osteoporosis fractures may benefit as much as women from bisphosphonates - drugs shown to strengthen bones.  50% of women and 25% of men over age 40 will experience an osteoporotic fracture in their life.  (Reinberg, 11/1)   Full story

HealthAIMA drug that was initially created to help cancer patients is now showing promise as a beneficial drug for multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.  Patients in the drug trial for alemtuzumab were half as likely to have a relapse in a two year period as patients on interferon, the most common MS medication.  Over 400,000 Americans suffer from MS.   (11/1)  Full Story

The Independent.  The Alzheimer's Society has funded research to treat the disease, and found that pre-existing drugs for hypertension, diabetes and skin conditions can also help fight dementia. (Lancefield, 10/31)  Full Story

CBSThe FDA has approved the drug Synribo for patients with blood and bone marrow cancer that has spread despite treatment with two other drugs.  Synribo is an injectable drug created by Teva Pharmaceutical.  (10/26) Full Story

Health Policy Matters
The New York TimesThe FDA is looking closer at generic drugs with extended-release after one generic didn't perform as well as its brand name version.  The finding came when patients suffering from depression said their depression returned after switching to the generic version of Wellbutrin XL.  (Thomas, 10/31) Full Story
