HealthDay. Experts are warning that some health problems may arise after Superstorm Sandy hit the northeast. Dangers may include lack of power, perishable foods not kept cold enough, and unsanitary water. Other concerns include injuries from clean-up, and medical issues from lack of medicines for chronic illnesses. (Gardner, 10/31) Full story

Juneau Empire. The cost of drug and alcohol abuse in 2010 for Alaska alone was 1.2B. $237M of that went to health care costs related to drug and alcohol abuse. (10/28) Full story

Forbes. The FDA has approved the drug Perjeta for patients with metastatic breast cancer. The drug works in combination with Herceptin and stops progression of the cancer for six months, prolonging the patients' life. The downside is that Herceptin costs $80K for 18 months, and Perjeta costs $100K. In the UK, drugs have to be cost-effective before approval. This new drug will likely bring about many ethical discussions regarding health care in the US. (Ubel, 10/29) Full Story

Chicago Tribune. Bayer, a German company, is buying Schiff Nutrition International, a US company. Bayer will pay $1.2B for the vitamin maker. Bayer has been expanding outside of the prescription drug industry into other areas with less profitable but more stable growth. (Burger, 10/30) Full Story

The Huffington Post. In further signs of compounding operations being under scrutiny, the Florida Department of Health has stopped operations at a pharmacy in the state. Rejuvi Pharmaceuticals prepares injectable drugs, and operations were halted due to rule violations. The FDA is paying closer attention to these facilities after the recent fungal meningitis outbreak. (10/29) Full Story

USA Today. The Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan watchdog, has reported that drug prices did not increase for Medicare consumers even after prescription drug makers gave discounts to seniors in the "doughnut hole." The price discounts were part of the health care law. (Kennedy, 10/29) Full Story
