HealthDay.  A new study showed that US adults between 20-54 are experiencing more strokes than they were 2 decades ago.  There are a few theories for this.  It could be related to the obesity epidemic, but it could also be related to better technology identifying more stroke victims.  Either way, the average age of a stroke victim has decreased from 71 to 69.   (Mozes, 10/10)   Full story    

 

Examiner.  The New England Compounding Center is the drug maker connected with the tainted steroid shots that have led to 91 people contracting fungal meningitis and 7 deaths.  The company is taking precautionary steps and recalling all of their products, such as acetaminophen suppositories, nipple ointments, morphine, vancomycin, and vitamin K.  (Mandel, 10/8)   Full story

USA Today.  A new Alzheimer's drug may be effective for patients with a mild form of the disease.  In an 18 month trial, patients demonstrated a 34% improvement in cognitive skills.  (Lloyd, 10/9)  Full Story

Fox NewsMedicare open enrollment is October 15 - December 7.  The basic average premium for coverage will remain $30.  In 2013, the Health Care Reform Act will begin increasing Medicare Part D's coverage of brand-name drugs, which means Medicare participants get 52.5% off those drugs and 21% off the price of generic drugs - up from 14%.  (Fuscaldo, 10/5) Full Story
