GRANTING OUR ONE MILLIONTH
DOLLAR!

Since its first grant of $4975 in 1995, the Northshore Schools Foundation has grown its support to the Northshore School District and reached a significant milestone of its millionth dollar granted.

Northshore Schools Foundation Vice President Becky Birch and Executive Director Carmin Dalziel presented a check for nearly $55,000 to Northshore School District Superintendent Larry Francois and School Board President Janet Quinn in support of the District's educational programs at the March 11 s
School Board meeting
. The funds were granted after a district-wide granting process which identified District needs that aligned with Foundation funding initiatives of Literacy; Advanced and Disadvantaged Learners; Teacher Excellence; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; and Enhancement Programming. Funds from the grant will be directed to four key projects over the next school year:

  • $28,715 for teacher training and National Board Teacher candidate support.
  • $13,500 for classroom libraries for new teachers to support the District's elementary literacy curriculum adoption
  • $5,000 for Leveled/Hi-Low & Spanish books for readers who are 2 or more years below grade level, books for their age and interest
  • $3,900 for Hi-Cap Math, District-wide Math Olympiad competition and to support a partnership between Woodinville elementary schools and Woodinville Heritage Society

"This grant is significant because it

represents several community partnerships and takes us beyond the million dollar mark," said Dalziel. "Funds raised are a result of the participation of thousands of community members over the fall fundraising activities, including money raised as a part of the All in For Kids phone campaign, Pour for Northshore, Molbaks Northshore Holiday Showcase, the Taste of the Holidays event and several local workplace giving campaigns."

Although the Foundation has reached a milestone , it is still holding more than $1million dollars' worth of funding requests from the District.

The 11th annual Light A Fire for Learning Luncheon will be held April 8, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Lynnwood Convention Center, with the intention of raising funds to support the District's efforts to insure that all students have a successful transition from graduation to the school or career of their choice.

Making an impact, every day
Thanks to You!

Spring is almost here and we are so very excited for our upcoming luncheon and to celebrate our big one-millionth dollar milestone with you. After 18 years, the Foundation can celebrate giving over $1,000,000 to our students.

And we have no intention of stopping there.  Our upcoming luncheon is poised to help us  get to the next millionth dollar granted a whole lot quicker -- and in so doing increase the positive impact the Foundation is having on our schools.

Our teachers are helping make that happen by writing grants for innovative classroom activities that they can implement in the Fall.

2014 is starting out great and I can't wait to see what the rest of the year will bring.

Thank you for investing in our youth and our community.

Sincerely,

Northshore Schools Foundation
Executive Director

P.S.  Have you saved your seat at our luncheon yet?  This is going to be an event you don't want to miss.

Announcing Anela Garringer as Luncheon Speaker

The Northshore Schools Foundation is proud to announce Anela Garringer as the student speaker for the Annual Light A Fire for Learning Luncheon April 8, 2014 at the Lynnwood Convention Center.

Garringer, a transfer student from Hawaii, struggled her sophomore year to get used to all the cultural and systematic changes between two very different communities.   What started as an elective course in computer aided design at WHS turned Garringer onto the hands-on learning that she excels at.   Instructor Chad Simpson pulled her under his wing and introduced her to the FIRST Robotics program, where she immediately found a way to serve and be involved.

"I loved the environment of the Robotics team world. They have a rule of professional graciousness, which creates a collaborative, supportive environment, that supports me," said Garringer.

Garringer first became exposed to the Foundation after a memorial donation lead to the purchase of new robotics sets for WHS. "Until we received the gift in Aaron Krofft's name, I had never heard of the Foundation before. I did lots of research about them and was really impressed with what I saw. It's an honor to have a chance to share about the difference the Foundation makes for students across the District," Garringer said.

This year's luncheon festivities will feature several of the projects that have affected Garringer's life, including student-made robots, 3D printers and CAD scanners. Viewing of the projects is open from 11:30 a.m. - noon at the Lynnwood Convention Center.

Garringer joins an impressive line-up of speakers including, University of Washington Associated Student Body President Micheal Kutz; Puget Sound Energy's Andy Wappler; and former Woodinville Council member Paulette Bauman, who will speak to the importance of ensuring that K-12 students graduate career and college ready with a skill set to support the job demand of the future.

Another special feature of this year's luncheon is that the Foundation will celebrate its one-millionth dollar granted.

Funds raised at the event will support innovation and the Foundation's funding initiatives of supporting Literacy and Arts; STEM Education; support for Advanced and Disadvantaged Learners; Health & Enhancement; and Teacher Excellence in all thirty-one (soon to be thirty-two) Northshore schools.

Welcome Lori Anderson

Welcome Lori Anderson

We are pleased to introduce Lori Anderson who joined our staff team in January 2014.

After being a one-person shop for several years, the board of the Foundation voted to employ a part-time staff person to support daily operations, communications and increasing our corporate giving relationships.

Lori, a results oriented professional, brings her experience as an office, account and marketing manager to us, supporting our Foundation as it continues to grow.  She is a strong collaborator and communicator and excels in developing processes and increasing the effectiveness of overall operations.   Beyond that she is bright, optimistic and quite fun to be around.

Lori is the mom of four girls ranging in age from 9 to 18. In her " free time" Lori is active with the Washington State Quarter Horse Association, leads a reader dog program at Monroe Boys & Girls Club, coaches basketball and has been an active volunteer with the Monroe School District.

Funding for Lori's position has been leveraged through this year's personnel budget, and by the increase in revenue received as the results of her efforts to track down matching dollars from companies like Microsoft and Boeing.

With Lori as a part of the team, the Foundation now has consistent office hours Monday -Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Please stop by and say hi if you are in the area.

You can reach Lori at 425-408-7680 or
