Hang Time: A free afterschool program held at Northshore, Kenmore and Skyview Junior High Schools. Hang-Time is a safe, supportive and welcoming environment where students are encouraged to learn and discover new talents, participate in enrichment and fitness activities, complete homework, and increase their connection to school and community. Hang-Time meets each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 2:30pm to 4:30pm in the cafeteria.

Natural Leaders assist and provide outreach to families where English is a second language and cultural differences may inhibit parental communication and participation at school.

GIVEBig is only 1 day away

Can you imagine the struggles of being a junior high student?

As if making the transition to a larger school and dealing with physical and emotional issues of adolescence wasn't hard enough, now you are suddenly faced with living up to the expectations of six different teachers, busy parents  and peer pressure.

You want to succeed but life is overwhelming.   You don't know which way to turn, finding the direction and support you need is hard.   Sometimes giving up seems like the only option.

In March, the Foundation's Light A Fire for Learning Luncheon featured three students who have mastered that struggle.  They shared how participating in the after-school Hang-Time program altered their lives and motivated them to increase their grades, build their confidence and explore new possibilities.  Hang-time gave them support and direction they needed in a chaotic time of their life, and now they are on-track for graduation ready to enter the career and college of their choice.

The Northshore Schools Foundation has made it a priority to fund the after school Hang-Time program at three Northshore junior high schools.  This program provides career guidance and opportunities to help students focus on their future and their careers by providing afterschool tutoring, counseling, exercise and life-skills programs. It also provides support, self motivation, and direction for students who otherwise might not connect junior high student achievement with career goals and future success in life.

This program was 100% grant funded, and today the future of that funding is uncertain.  Won't you help provide direction for a struggling junior high student by making a donation on May 15th for GIVEBig.?

On May 15th, community members will be given an opportunity to GIVEBig in support of the
Community Schools Program.

The Difference an After-School Program Can Make

Bainbridge T. didn't know that he could go to college, until the Hang-Time program took him on a tour of local community college's to see that it was possible. Bainbridge is one of 300 students who participate in afterschool homework programs that combines mentoring with physical activity and healthly snacks in support of junior high students.   On April 28th, Bainbridge and two of his friends told their story at the Northshore Schools Foundation Luncheon about how the Hang time program has helped them to increase their grades, build their confidence and inspire them towards college and the career of their choice.

"I have to keep my grades up so that I can go to school and study criminal justice and become a police officer," said Anthony.   Hang-Time is a part of a more comprehensive district-wide program called Community Schools Network which pulls together community partners to provide supportive learning opportunities for all students to achieve their full potential and build a strong community. Northshore Community Schools envision all students discovering the pathways to their future and sharing their gifts with the world.

"When we saw how moved our community was to see the impact this program is making on students, we wanted to do more," said Carmin Dalziel, Executive Director.   "Since future funding for this program is uncertain, we saw this opportunity to leverage GIVEBig to impact our kids.   This program impacts more than 3,000 students and 1,000 families annually and supports a significant number of school board goals."
