Northshore Schools Foundation

2011-12 Annual Report Cover

Greetings! ,

Your involvement in the Foundation has been phenomenal this year, ultimately resulting in our nearly doubling our grants to the students of the Northshore School District through both district grants and individual classroom grants.   Thanks to you, we were able to grant more than $119,000 to the students of Northshore.

Thanks to our 2011-12 grants, every child enrolled in grades K-7 will come into contact with Foundation-funded programs no less than 7 times. Hundreds of secondary students will also benefit from funds granted this year.

Some of our most significant accomplishments for 2011-12 are:

  • We increased our number of supporters by 100%, doubling the people who have invested in our students since 2010.
  • Astronaut Bonnie Dunbar spoke at the Light a Fire for Learning Luncheon. Her inspirational biography was highly relevant to our educational community and our local economy, which is heavily supported by STEM industries.
  • Our luncheon was the largest Northshore community nonprofit event this year, attended by over 350 community members, business leaders and elected officials.
  • We revised our mission statement to more clearly define what we do: The Northshore Schools Foundation raises funds and builds partnerships to support academic excellence and success for ALL Northshore students, in alignment with district priorities.

With your continuing support and involvement, we believe that we will be able to continue increasing our grants to students in the years ahead.

There are several other great things that happened this year, many of which you will find highlighted in our annual report.

Northshore Holiday Showcase at

 Molbak's!

 November 10, 11 & 12

The Northshore Holiday Showcase is a great opportunity to expose younger children to the leadership of older NSD students while enjoying age appropriate activities and allowing parents to shop for a great cause.

As a part of the Molbak's holiday kick-off weekend, Molbak's is designating a portion of the weekend's sales to the Northshore Schools Foundation to provide district-wide support for all students.

This event is organized by NSD's Event, Management and Planning Program and includes free activities for students of all ages from 11:00-2:00pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Activities include:

  • Table decorating ideas from displays by Inglemoor High School's Event Planning class.
  • Gingerbread village by Bothell High's Culinary Program
  • Holiday crafts for kids supervised by Bothell High School's Teaching Academy.
  • Live holiday music performed by talented Northshore students.
  • Several beautiful photo opportunities, perfect for holiday cards.

 Foundation Supporter special event!

Sunday 12:30pm in the event area!

Foundation Supporters (that's you), NSD staff and Chamber members are invited to join us for a semi-private reception before the event from 12:00-12:45pm.

Don't miss a special performance by the Crystal Springs Music Program who will be presenting their Veteran's Day Concert for all to enjoy on Sunday at 1:00pm.

Help us spread the word by sharing this Facebook event, or forwarding this invite.  If you happen to take this opportunity to shop (and we hope you do) make sure you say thank you for supporting students to the staff at Molbak's!

THANK YOU so much and we look forward to seeing you there!

The Foundation is also recruiting volunteers to be elves for this event and help by taking photos for families who might want to use the beautiful backgrounds for their holiday cards.

The Northshore Community is

All in for Kids!

The tallies are still coming in, but we can tell you that more than 140 students made over 13,000 calls in support of the Northshore Schools Foundation's Career to College Readiness funding initiative.  Donations raised from this campaign are slotted to fund the

district's Career to College Readiness funding requests including:

Elementary Math Olympiad; a pilot college board test, and

continuing literacy support for our beginning learners so that they can be ready to succeed in more advanced courses.  Actual allocations will not be finalized until all of the pledges are in, but we are excited for the support that our students are getting from their community.

"It's a hard time to ask for support," said Carmin Dalziel, executive director.  "We know many families are struggling and the costs at the beginning of the school year can sometimes be overwhelming.  It's amazing that so many parents decide to give above and beyond their support of their own children's school.

"That said, this is one of the most comprehensive ways that parents can support their local community.  When a gift of $60 can be combined with hundreds of other gifts, collectively tens of thousands of students are impacted.  It's a great impact for your investment."

The Foundation now estimates that students come into contact with an average of 12 Foundation funded programs throughout their school careers.  Thousands of students are impacted everyday by the investments our community makes in them.

If you made a pledge in the campaign and would like to save a stamp, feel free to follow this link.     If somehow we missed you during the calling campaign and you want to add your support. Click here!     THANK YOU SO MUCH!

 Thank you Sponsors!

The Foundation is focused on five funding initiatives and in an effort to support the Enhancement Initiative we are piloting an activity night for students.

Foundation sponsors Evergreen Karate and Snapdoodle Toys are generously offering kids' activities from 7:00-9:00pm on Friday November 16th.   Proceeds from the evening will support innovative classroom grants and funding for grants that fall in the Enrichment category, which encompasses Health, Fitness, Art, Music, Culture and Citizenship.

What kind of Enrichment programs does the Foundation fund?

In the 2012-13 Innovative Grant Cycle the Foundation dedicated $5000 to support music, service and empathy.  The Foundation approved grants from Arrowhead, Crystal Springs, Kenmore and Wellington Elementary Schools, and one grant from Leota Junior High that emphasized this funding priority.

"We struggled to find a name for the category that encompassed such a wide variety of programs that many people consider essential, not enrichment.  We hope that by people seeing it as a priority of the Foundation, and by seeing our funding support, that the importance of these programs is demonstrated," said Foundation Executive Director Carmin Dalziel.
