Musings -

    Three Things...

I just read an article by Anthony Eilers about what three things a writer needs to be successful and realized that the same guidelines apply to any project, regardless of your

subject or arena..

Whatever your project, to be successful you need discipline.  Discipline means making a plan and sticking to it, regardless of distractions.  Working haphazardly will produce

a haphazard result; sticking to your plan and working in a forward direction will yield desired results. Being wishy washy, paying more attention to the tasks you like and less to those you don't will lead to chaos and unsuccessful results.

The second discipline is stamina. It is important that you are prepared physically to get the job done; the need for extra breaks disrupts your progress and tends toward less than your best effort.  You also need to be prepared mentally.  If you have a challenge hanging over your head you are likely to be distracted.  Do what you have to do to remedy the situation and then put it on the shelf for later. Apply all your mental energy to your current project and then you can revisit other projects that need your attention.

The third discipline is the need for recognition.  Operating in a void will make you very uneasy.  Share your work, or at least your progress, with someone you respect; ask for feedback.  You may be surprised at the responses you get if you only ask.  Keep a notebook of raves and awards from previous projects and look at it occasionally to remind yourself of just how good you really are. Operating in a vacuum is not healthy or productive; letting the World know what you are doing will help build your confidence and allow you to do your best work ever.

Your Money-Your Life

No Guilt This Year

Are you setting yourself up for failure and guilt again this year?  New Year's resolutions rarely get resolved.  Most get dropped very soon after they are made because they are not specific enough and really can't be accomplished.

You can expect better results if you break those resolutions into smaller specific tasks.  You are not going to lose weight this year; you are going to eat healthier to lose 10 pounds each month.  Tack on a reward if you reach your goal and reset the task for next month. Don't beat yourself up if you miss a deadline; consider it an education and reset the goal more realistically.

Remember that goals are just dreams with deadlines.  Each of your "resolutions" should have progress and completion dates. Enlist the help of your family or friends to maintain accountability and keep yourself on track.  Ask for their advice when you are challenged and celebrate with them when you reach a goal.
