McDonalds Does It Right
McDonalds does it right. What? Yes, they have created a template that guarantees that the customer will always know what to expect at any of their stores.
Every McDonalds works from the same template that was created to insure efficiency and productivity. They have streamlined all of their processes so that every customer order is consistent. Whether you go to a McDonalds in Omaha or Miami the product and the experience is totally predictable. They have over 30,000 restaurants in 119 countries and except for local customs they all follow same format.
Several famous people including Pink, Jay Leno and Jeff Bezos all got their starts at McDonalds. Queen Elizabeth even owns a franchise just outside of Buckingham Palace. New employees are evaluated for their possible futures with the company. If you are good and embrace the Company culture you can be moved up all the way to corporate management.
There is another school of thought that says a business should be unique and have its own personality. Your local "hole in the wall" diner is a good example. Although the food is usually consistent the experience will vary from visit to visit. Some people prefer this distinctive experience and find it a more casual and satrisfying encounter.
Either version has its pluses and minuses. When done right either can be successful. You have to decide for yourself what will work best for you, your customers, and your success.
