Social Media Consultants May Be Overrated
You don't need me
You are constantly being bombarded with ads, postings, emails, and tweets about the importance of hiring social media consultants; I know because I am one. Once you have your systems in place you don't need me
Understanding how a consultant can really be helpful vs. just being expensive requires serious consideration. A good Social Media Consultant can be very helpful for creating the strategies. They have the tools to help you evaluate the best channels for you and can help you with your profiles and image, not every platform will apply to your business; Facebook may be good, but Pintrest may be better. Competent consultants have the experience to help you sort through the choices.
Many people hire someone to handle all of their social media because they feel that they are too busy to do it themselves. This someone probably calls themselves a "consultant" and says that they can do it all for you. This is not a good idea however; they probably don't know you, your mission, or vision for your business.
The purpose of using social media is to connect and build relationships; nobody else can do that for you. "People buy from people they know and trust"; nobody else can build that trust for you. It may be helpful to have someone lend a hand with the nuts and bolts of posting, reviewing messages for content so that you don't miss anything important, but not for creating meaningful content. Even the biggest companies have employee-managers for their social media, but their message is directed by marketing departments.
Meeting with your Social Media Consultant a couple of times a year can be very helpful to keep you heading in the right direction, but beyond that it is important that you engage yourself with your social media relationships. Your aim is to have people do business with you, not someone else speaking with your social media voice.
