Musings -

Continuing Education

Our economy is improving so many people are beginning to review the investment strategy they had before the meltdown.  They may consider stocks, bonds, real estate, or gold each of which may be a good idea. Some may even choose to bury their loot in a can under the tree.

All of these may be a part of your strategy, but by far the best investment you can ever make is in yourself.  Your goal should be to learn something new every day.  The results of this activity will be amazing. Learning something new every day may involve doing an old thing a new way or it may be something that is a complete surprise.  Either way those little "light bulb" moments can be real treasures.

Trying to learn something new every day in your business world may sound like a daunting task for your already overloaded schedule but it can easily be simplified with some of the new tools that are available to you at little or no cost.  Today's technology allows you to attend seminars and classes without ever leaving your desk.  It is easy to print out a slide show for review or record a lecture to listen to at a more convenient time. You can view a seminar at midnight in your P.J.'s and nobody will know.

A vast amount of material is available to you online. Search engines like Google can open whole new worlds for you.  Some training programs can be very expensive and others completely free; more expensive is not any indication of quality.  You probably already belong to associations or clubs that offer online courses to their members at no cost.  A growing number of companies also offer short videos or presentations of content that you can use for free.  For them free training classes are an advertising tool and a way for them to attract customers.

There is no excuse for you not to invest in yourself and try to learn something new every day.  Just keep your eyes (and mind) open and check your current associations for all kinds of continuing education.

Protect Your Accounts

The recent spate of computer hacking of credit card info may have you operating in panic mode every time you go shopping.  Building a fence around your financial world will offer some protection. The easiest way to add layer of protection to your accounts is to change your password.  This easy step is often all you may need to secure an account and keep trouble at bay.

Be sure when you do change your password that it is a combination of letters and numbers that is only known to you.  Don't use the obvious: 12345, "password", your birthday, etc.  Use CAPITALS, lower case letters, and numbers in combos that only you can recognize.  Don't use the same password for everything, each can be a simple variation but should be unique. You can keep a list, if necessary, so that you can manage all the variations This may seem like a chore but having these variations will help a lot if your computer gets hacked.
