Building Your Business
THE TABLE Building a business is a lot like building a table. Your table will not stand if it does not have four solid legs, and neither will your business. The four legs you need to build your table/business are passion, vision, financing, and tools. Each is as important as each other.
PASSION Passion may seem to be the easiest leg to attach; but that my not really be the case. Trying to build or market a product or service that you are not passionate about is not likely to be sustainable. Common wisdom tells us that you should "do what you love, love what you do", otherwise you just have another JOB. Successful entrepreneurs look forward to going to work; they are excited about what the day has to offer. Without passion you are likely to get tired, or bored, long before you can see your goal. That light heading toward you is either a train, or the sunshine rising up to meet you.
VISION The second leg is very important. You have to know what you hope to accomplish. If you don't know where you are going you won't know when you get there. Flopping around hoping to reap great rewards will undermine your goals. You can't do strategic planning if you have no plan.
MONEY You will need financing to start your business. You will needs two piles. The first, of course, is the money to start; figure that you will need twice what you predict to cover all contingencies. The other; and possibly more important, is living expenses for a year. New businesses don't generally yield any profits for a while so you need money to run your life while you build your business.
TOOLS Related to funding is the need for tools. You will seriously handicap yourself if you don't have the right tools to do your job. Besides what you need to build your widget, you will also need things like computers and software, communication systems, office supplies; the list goes on.
Over the years, I have done a lot of studying and then a lot of writing so I could share what I had learned with you. Being prepared will increase your chances of success so you don't have to "reinvent the wheel."
