Journal it!
Do you keep a journal or diary? These can be very powerful tools to help your personal development and can also be invaluable to grow your business.
After a selling activity, write some notes in a journal about what went well, and what challenges you had to overcome. Then, examine the writing for any irrationally negative thoughts and reframe them with a more realistic view of what actually happened. For example, if someone criticized your work or product, and your next thought was, "I'll never sell my work!" ask yourself what the evidence is for that negative thought. If there is evidence for it, develop a plan to redo your process. If there is no valid evidence for your reaction, replace it with a more rational thought, like, "What can I learn from her reaction?" Make the necessary changes and then move on to the next prospect."
If something went particularly well, write that down, too, as closely as you can recall, what you said and how the customer
resp onded. Try to write your notes right after the sale, if possible, when the transaction is fresh in your mind! This is the perfect tool to define your success.
Your journal will become your guidebook for future strategic planning. Everything you need to know about how to successfully approach a customer will be contained in your notes.
You can't expect to make a perfect presentation every time, but you can use your mistakes along with your successes to learn how to grow your business to new heights.
