This Week at Prince of Peace...

Tenth Sunday After Pentecost                                          July 24, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
Genesis 18:20-32; Psalm 138; Colossians 2:6-19

GOSPEL:  Luke 11:1-13
Jesus was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." He said to them, "When you pray, say:
Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial."
And he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.' And he answers from within, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.' I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.
So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish? Or if the child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

Take Note: Our Summer Worship schedule has begun! From Memorial Day Weekend (5/29) through Labor Day Weekend (9/4), we'll have ONE SUNDAY SERVICE at 9:30 am
followed by fellowship! The Saturday 5 pm service will also continue each weekend.

Could You Provide Food or Supplies for VBS? A great way to help with VBS even if you're unable to be on-site during the program is to donate items we need to make snack and also breakfast foods for the volunteers each morning. There is a paper sign-up list in the narthex, or you can sign-up online at: www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0a4baeac2ca31-prince.
Financial contributions are also welcome! Note "VBS Snacks" on your check or cash donation and place in the Office or Offering plate. Thanks!

The Serving in Worship schedule for July & August has been posted
on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts.

Calling all High Schoolers! On Saturday, August 20th we are planning a trip to Hershey Park for the day. We will meet at the church at 8:00 am and carpool. The price of the ticket depends on how many people we have going (either $38.50 for the day OR $62.95 for the day). Please RSVP to Pastor Christine or sign up in the narthex ASAP. We are also looking for two adults to go along as chaperones and willing to drive.

The Body and Soul program shakes things up for the summer!
Weather permitting, we will meet to exercise at various outdoor locations. The next meeting will be on Thursday, July 28 at 6:30 pm for a walk on the C&O canal towpath to the Great Falls viewing area. Meet at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center (11710 MacArthur Blvd). Parking should be free after 5pm. Drive up to the gate and it will open even if no one is in the booth. If the booth happens to be staffed you will need $10 for parking. For inclement weather, call Marybeth at 240-644-4146 to check whether the activities are canceled. Pick up a full schedule from the narthex or contact Marybeth Stockman

Annual School Supply Drive runs through August 8th! Prince of Peace is collecting NEW school supplies again this year to help equip Montgomery County's neediest public school children with backpacks and other school supplies to begin the school year. Please leave donations in the collection box in the narthex. We are collecting the following new supplies from July 2nd through August 8th. TOP 5 Items Needed: Sturdy Backpacks (grades K-12), Lined Filler Paper, Tab Dividers, 2-Pocket Folders, Pencil Pouches. Other Items Needed: 1-Subject Notebooks, Composition Books, Large Pink Erasers, Red & Black Pens, Packages of Big Markers, Scissors (Blunt Tip and Pointed Tip), Rulers, Boxes of Colored Pencils. Any items on the list will be greatly appreciated! If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Woodard.

Looking for a fun Service Project for the Summer? In addition to quilts, Lutheran World Relief distributes Baby Care Kits, Personal Care Kits, Fabric Kits, Fleece Tied Blankets, and School Kits. Consider making some this summer and we will deliver them with the quilts in August. For complete directions, see http://lwr.org/get-involved/build-kits-of-care. We have some wonderful donated baby sweaters, so if you are willing to make one or more Baby Kits, we can get you started. We also can use new or like-new baby layette items. Contact the Office for more info.

Women's Book Group ~ In August, the group turns to a true story of life in Africa, The Elephant Whisperer: My Life with the Herd in the African Wild by Lawrence Anthony, who established the Thula Thula private game reserve in Zululand, South Africa. The memoir tells the story of his relationship with a herd of "rogue" elephants, given away by another reserve. Through patience and time, he built an amazing rapport with the elephants. The meeting starts at 7:30 pm on Thursday, August 11 at the home of June Herron. RSVP to June.

Join us for our next Saturday Dinner Out on August 13 around 6:15 pm at Diya Bistro in Kentlands (917 Quince Orchard Rd). Saturday Dinner Out is a great time to come together and get to know (and eat with!) other families at Prince of Peace in a casual environment. All are welcome!

Our wonderful new Playset is nearly complete! Watch a 57-second time lapse video of the five hour build by clicking here (courtesy of Gordon Gipe). Many thanks to those who worked hard to make it happen: Jamie Pflasterer, Ric Kienzle, Deborah Dixon, Terry Forish, Gordon Gipe, our demolition crew, and our generous donor! We are very appreciative of this donation and know that it will bring lots of fun to our community.

Prince of Peace has partnered with Shaare Torah and the Islamic Society of the Washington Area to host the first ever Montgomery County Interfaith 5K.
Register TODAY for the Run/Walk which will take place on September 5th at the Soccerplex in Germantown. Proceeds from this event will benefit Gaithersburg HELP. Putting on an event of this size requires many volunteers, a lot of planning, and area business sponsors. If you work for or own a business in Montgomery County that might be willing to be a sponsor, please see Pastor Christine. Sponsorship levels start as low as $275. Mark your calendars now for this great, family fun event.

Don't forget to bring donations for Gaithersburg HELP!
Canned fruit & tuna are their most needed items right now.  Please be sure to pick up a can or two when you go to the store to help keep the pantry in constant supply this summer. Donations can be dropped off in the foyer.

The July/August Glad Tidings is available on our website!

Please consider giving to the ELCA Disaster Response to help people affected by catastrophic flooding in West Virginia. It will be a long road to recovery and Lutheran Disaster Response will stand with all those affected. Visit the ELCA Disaster Response webpage to donate or learn more about how you can help.

Our Worship Services require the efforts of many dedicated volunteers. Please help by serving as usher, greeter and/or snack helper.  Signup through VolunteerSpot or contact the Office. You will be scheduled approximately once every two months (with the ability to reschedule). Thank you for contributing your time and talents! Many hands make light work!

We are experiencing phone problems in the Office. If you do not get through, please wait a few minutes and try again. Email is a great way to reach us: Office, Pastor Steve, Pastor Christine

VolunteerSpot is our new way to stay informed and sign up for volunteer opportunities at Prince of Peace. An email is sent for each need, as it is identified. The message contains a link that makes it easy to add your name as a helper. Here are our current volunteer requests:
