This Week at Prince of Peace...

Ninth Sunday After Pentecost                                          July 17, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
Genesis 18:1-10a; Psalm 15; Colossians 1:15-28

GOSPEL:  Luke 10:38-42
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."

Take Note: Our Summer Worship schedule has begun! From Memorial Day Weekend (5/29) through Labor Day Weekend (9/4), we'll have ONE SUNDAY SERVICE at 9:30 am
followed by fellowship! The Saturday 5 pm service will also continue each weekend.

Could You Provide Food or Supplies for VBS? A great way to help with VBS even if you're unable to be on-site during the program is to donate items we need to make snack and also breakfast foods for the volunteers each morning. There is a paper sign-up list in the narthex, or you can sign-up online at: www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0a4baeac2ca31-prince.

Let your creativity show and help VBS! On Sunday, July 17 join us in the Fellowship Hall at 11:00 am. We will be creating bats, gems, lightning bugs, and miner lamps for our flamingos. Questions? Contact Judy Bruening.

Join us on July 16 around 6:15 pm for our next Saturday Dinner Out: Picnic & Yard Games at PoP! Pack a picnic and have dinner after church. Bring your favorite yard game.

The Serving in Worship schedule for July & August has been posted on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts.

The July/August Glad Tidings is available on our website

High School aged youth - We're going to see the Frederick Keys baseball game on Friday, July 22. Tickets will be approximately $11. We will meet at the church at 5:30 pm (game is at 7pm). Please signup in the narthex or RSVP to Pastor Christine by July 17th. We need an adult or two who is willing to help drive.

Women's Book Group ~ Join the group for a discussion of The Rent Collector by Camron Wright.  Nancy Wolejsza hosts the gathering on Thursday, July 14 at 7:30 pm. RSVP to Nancy.

Last chance to sign up for for Vacation Bible School "Cave Quest - Following Jesus the Light of the World" July 25-29 from 9am-12pm.
VBS is always lots of fun for kids and adults! We still need helpers so please signup in the narthex or contact Lori Kohne. VBS is for children ages 3 (potty trained) thru entering 5th grade. Registration forms are available in the narthex and on the PoP website. Registration fee is $50 per participant with a max of $150 per family. Each family will receive a CD of the music and a T-shirt for each child. Need based scholarships are available. Invite your friends and neighbors to join us for an over-the-top underground adventure!

The Body and Soul program shakes things up for the summer! Weather permitting, we will meet to exercise at various outdoor locations. The next meeting will be on Thursday, July 28 at 6:30 pm for a walk on the C&O canal towpath to the Great Falls viewing area. Meet at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center (11710 MacArthur Blvd). Parking should be free after 5pm. Drive up to the gate and it will open even if no one is in the booth. If the booth happens to be staffed you will need $10 for parking. For inclement weather, call Marybeth at 240-644-4146 to check whether the activities are canceled. Pick up a full schedule from the narthex or contact Marybeth Stockman.

Our wonderful new Playset is complete! Watch a 57-second time lapse video of the five hour build by clicking here (courtesy of Gordon Gipe). Many thanks to those who worked hard to make it happen: Jamie Pflasterer, Ric Kienzle, Deborah Dixon, Terry Forish, Gordon Gipe, our demolition crew, and our generous donor! We are very appreciative of this donation and know that it will bring lots of fun to our community.

Annual School Supply Drive runs through August 8th! Prince of Peace is collecting NEW school supplies again this year to help equip Montgomery County's neediest public school children with backpacks and other school supplies to begin the school year. Please leave donations in the collection box in the narthex. We are collecting the following new supplies from July 2nd through August 8th. TOP 5 Items Needed: Sturdy Backpacks (grades K-12), Lined Filler Paper, Tab Dividers, 2-Pocket Folders, Pencil Pouches. Other Items Needed: 1-Subject Notebooks, Composition Books, Large Pink Erasers, Red & Black Pens, Packages of Big Markers, Scissors (Blunt Tip and Pointed Tip), Rulers, Boxes of Colored Pencils. Any items on the list will be greatly appreciated! If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Woodard.

Looking for a fun Service Project for the Summer? In addition to quilts, Lutheran World Relief distributes Baby Care Kits, Personal Care Kits, Fabric Kits, Fleece Tied Blankets, and School Kits. Consider making some this summer and we will deliver them with the quilts in August. For complete directions, see http://lwr.org/get-involved/build-kits-of-care. We have some wonderful donated baby sweaters, so if you are willing to make one or more Baby Kits, we can get you started. We also can use new or like-new baby layette items. Contact the Office for more info.

Please consider giving to the ELCA Disaster Response
to help people affected by catastrophic flooding in West Virginia. It will be a long road to recovery and Lutheran Disaster Response will stand with all those affected. Visit the ELCA Disaster Response webpage to donate or learn more about how you can help.

Our hard-working Quilters have been very productive making quilts for Lutheran World Relief to distribute to needy people throughout the world. We welcome sewers and non-sewers of all (or no) levels of experience to join our merry band of Quilters. We meet from 10am-12pm on Tuesdays each week. Just show up or contact Lisa Conary for info.

Prince of Peace has partnered with Shaare Torah and the Islamic Society of the Washington Area to host the first ever Montgomery County Interfaith 5K.
Register TODAY for the Run/Walk which will take place on September 5th at the Soccerplex in Germantown. Proceeds from this event will benefit Gaithersburg HELP. Putting on an event of this size requires many volunteers, a lot of planning, and area business sponsors. If you work for or own a business in Montgomery County that might be willing to be a sponsor, please see Pastor Christine. Sponsorship levels start as low as $275. Mark your calendars now for this great, family fun event.

Don't forget to bring donations for Gaithersburg HELP!
Canned fruit & tuna are their most needed items right now. Please be sure to pick up a can or two when you go to the store to help keep the pantry in constant supply this summer. Donations can be dropped off in the foyer.

Our Worship Services require the efforts of many dedicated volunteers. Please help by serving as usher, greeter and/or snack helper.  Signup through VolunteerSpot or contact the Office. You will be scheduled approximately once every two months (with the ability to reschedule). Thank you for contributing your time and talents! Many hands make light work!

We are experiencing phone problems in the Office. If you do not get through, please wait a few minutes and try again. Email is a great way to reach us: Office, Pastor Steve, Pastor Christine

VolunteerSpot is our new way to stay informed and sign up for volunteer opportunities at Prince of Peace. An email is sent for each need, as it is identified. The message contains a link that makes it easy to add your name as a helper. Here are our current volunteer requests:
