This Week at Prince of Peace...

Sixth Sunday After Pentecost                                         June 26, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
1 Kings 19:15-16, 19-21; Psalm 16; Galatians 5:1, 13-25

GOSPEL:  Luke 9:51-62
When the days drew near for him to be taken up, Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" But he turned and rebuked them. Then they went on to another village.
As they were going along the road, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." To another he said, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." But Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." Another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home." Jesus said to him, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."

Take Note: Our Summer Worship schedule has begun! From Memorial Day Weekend (5/29) through Labor Day Weekend (9/4), we'll have ONE SUNDAY SERVICE at 9:30 am
followed by fellowship! The Saturday 5 pm service will also continue each weekend.

This weekend we welcome Kenzie Wolejsza into God's family through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism!

Pastor Steve is on vacation June 20 - July 8.

Be sure to join us on the weekend of July 2nd & 3rd to welcome Chris Schaefer as our guest preacher at all services!

The Serving in Worship schedule for June & July has been posted on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts. Thanks!

Rising 9th graders - 12th graders: Join AJ and Pastor Christine on June 24 at 6:30 pm at the church for an evening of brainstorming ideas for fun and fellowship. OH - and we're going to graffiti the playground equipment before it's torn down. Pizza will be provided. Questions? See AJ or Pastor Christine.

Join us at POP Game Night this Saturday, June 25 after the Saturday service around 6:15 pm. (Note new time.) Bring your favorite board game or try someone else's. This event is open to all and recommended for ages 13+. Contact Chris Michel if you have any questions.

The Body and Soul program moves outdoors for the summer months and will meet on a limited schedule. The next meeting will be on Thursday, June 23 at 6:30 pm at Quince Orchard High School for a walk around the track (meet at entrance to the track). Other activities might include stretching, resistance exercises, and/or stairs if desired. Bring water. In the event of inclement weather, call Marybeth at 240-644-4146 to check whether the activities are canceled. Pick up a full schedule from the narthex or contact Marybeth Stockman for more info.

Bolt pullers, truckers, and sawers needed! We are looking for a few good men (and women!) to lend a hand in taking down our beloved play set on Saturday, June 25, starting at 9:00 am. If you have a truck, tools and/or the ability to help we would love to have you join us in taking it down. Please sign up online thru VolunteerSpot (http://vols.pt/WSu93g) or email Ric Kienzle. With many hands we should be able to make light work of getting it done.

Our play set has been very well-loved and we are pleased to announce that a very generous donation has been made to replace it. We are very appreciative of this donation, and know that it will bring lots of fun to our community. We hope to have the new play set installed and ready for action within the next month or so. Listen for the laughter, and you'll know it has arrived!

Empty Nesters Crab Fest & Dive In on Saturday, July 2 at 2:00 pm: Empty Nesters are invited to crack crabs and swim like crabs in the pool. Wear your swimsuit and bring a side dish or salad. We will kindly ask for a contribution to cover the cost of crabs. Joan Kowalik & Susan Victor will host this event at their home. Please RSVP to Joan or sign up in the narthex by June 25. If you don't like crabs, we can grill up some burgers but please let us know ahead of time. At PoP, you're an Empty Nester if your children (if you have any) are all over 18. It doesn't matter whether you have children, where your children live, what your marital status is, or what your retirement status is. If you want to socialize with this diverse and interesting group, join us!

The Annual June Festival at Pleasant View Historical Site (right next door to PoP) will be held Saturday, June 25 at 12:00-4:00 pm. The Pleasant View site (11810 Darnestown Rd) houses three original structures that all date back to the late nineteenth century: Pleasant View Methodist Episcopal Church, Pleasant View Cemetery, and Quince Orchard Colored School. The historic church and school buildings will be open to tour. Come for an afternoon of food, music, fellowship, information, and fun!

Let your creativity show and help VBS! On Sunday, July 10 and Sunday, July 17 join us in the Fellowship Hall at 11:00 am. We will be creating bats, gems, lightning bugs, and miner lamps for our flamingos. Questions? Contact Judy Bruening.

Property Announcement: Be sure to check out our new roof and gutters. Many thanks to Tom Kettler and Gordon Gipe for planning and overseeing the project! The steeple was removed temporarily and is being painted. Check out a 26-second video of our steeple being removed: https://youtu.be/_RbfVKVAc6Q.

Join us on July 16 around 6:15 pm for our next Saturday Dinner Out: Picnic & Yard Games at PoP! Pack a picnic and have dinner after church. Bring your favorite yard game.

Join us for Vacation Bible School "Cave Quest - Following Jesus the Light of the World" July 25-29 from 9am-12pm. VBS is always lots of fun for kids and adults! We still need helpers so please signup in the narthex or contact Lori Kohne. VBS is for children ages 3 (potty trained) thru entering 5th grade. Registration forms are available in the narthex and on the PoP website. Registration fee is $50 per participant with a max of $150 per family. Each family will receive a CD of the music and a T-shirt for each child. Need based scholarships are available. Invite your friends and neighbors to join us for an over-the-top underground adventure!

Women's Book Group ~ Join the group for a discussion of The Rent Collector by Camron Wright. The book takes us to the largest municipal dump in Cambodia, a desperate place in one of the poorest countries in the world. The author shows that hope exists even here; as one reader on Amazon.com said, "It takes talent to write in a way that helps us see that even small and seemingly insignificant acts of kindness and generosity can mean a world of difference to someone else." Nancy Wolejsza hosts the gathering on Thursday, July 13 at 7:30 pm. RSVP to Nancy.

Our hard-working Quilters have been very productive making quilts for Lutheran World Relief to distribute to needy people throughout the world. We welcome sewers and non-sewers of all (or no) levels of experience to join our merry band of Quilters. We meet from 10am-12pm on Tuesdays each week. Just show up or contact Lisa Conary for info.

Looking for a fun Service Project for the Summer? In addition to quilts, Lutheran World Relief distributes Personal Care Kits, Baby Care Kits, Fabric Kits, Fleece Tied Blankets, and School Kits. Consider making some this summer and we will deliver them with the quilts in August. For complete directions, see http://lwr.org/get-involved/build-kits-of-care.

Prince of Peace has partnered with Shaare Torah and the Islamic Society of the Washington Area to host the first ever Montgomery County Interfaith 5K.
Register TODAY for the Run/Walk which will take place on September 5th at the Soccerplex in Germantown. Proceeds from this event will benefit Gaithersburg HELP. Putting on an event of this size requires many volunteers, a lot of planning, and area business sponsors. If you work for or own a business in Montgomery County that might be willing to be a sponsor, please see Pastor Christine. Sponsorship levels start as low as $275. Mark your calendars now for this great, family fun event.

Thanks to everyone who helped with our Yard Sale and especially Elizabeth Cockerham for her leadership! We enjoyed food, fellowship, and a great time shopping for bargains. Many unsold items were donated to Goodwill. We expect to net around $14,000! If you haven't paid your tab yet, the box is on the credenza in the narthex. Please mark your check "Yard Sale" and place in the offering plate.

Don't forget to bring donations for Gaithersburg HELP! Canned fruit & tuna are their most needed items right now. Please be sure to pick up a can or two when you go to the store to help keep the pantry in constant supply this summer. Donations can be dropped off in the foyer.

Our Worship Services require the efforts of many dedicated volunteers. Please help by serving as usher, greeter and/or snack helper.  Signup through VolunteerSpot or contact the Office. You will be scheduled approximately once every two months (with the ability to reschedule). Thank you for contributing your time and talents! Many hands make light work!

Lutheran Disaster Response ~ The last few months have been a somber season. We have seen one of the highest concentrations of significant disasters in decades. As a church we are called to respond. Through Lutheran Disaster Response, your gifts will provide help and hope in the face of devastation. Thanks to a generous donor, your gifts now will be matched - dollar for dollar - until we reach $100,000. Visit the ELCA Disaster Response webpage to donate or learn more about how you can help.
