This Week at Prince of Peace...

Second Sunday After Pentecost                                   May 29, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
1 Kings 8:22-23, 41-43; Psalm 96:1-9; Galatians 1:1-12

GOSPEL: Luke 7:1-10
After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and close to death. When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy of having you do this for him, for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us." And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and the slave does it." When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

YARD SALE Setup Starts Sunday after the 9:30 service! Our Yard Sale is next Saturday, June 4 (7am-2pm) and we need lots of help this Sunday setting up in order to be ready for Donation Drop Off beginning at noon. Donations can also be dropped off Monday thru Thursday 9am-9pm each day.
Throughout the week there are many opportunities for you to help out:
* help with setup beginning Sunday after the 9:30 am service
* during the week (Monday-Friday) stop by the church anytime between 10am-9pm to help sort & price
* help with sales on Yard Sale day anytime between 6:30am-2pm
* help with cleanup on Yard Sale day 1:30-4pm; this includes packaging leftover items to donate to charities
* post our Yard Sale flyer near your home or work
* donate large boxes, especially relatively shallow boxes (about 12"); drop off in the Children's Clothing section in the Fellowship Hall
* There are still a few openings on the Food Signup sheet too!
We need all hands on deck to make our Yard Sale a big success!

We have limited ability to pick up larger items for the Yard Sale. If you have an item which requires pick-up, sign up in the narthex or contact the Office.

Many thanks to everyone who supported our Bake Sale last Sunday! The 4th-6th graders are putting together Summer Packets for the same children we support with the Giving Tree. The Packet includes at least one book, a composition book & a pencil; and since our Bake Sale was such a success ($237!), we were able to add pencil sharpeners and bookmarks.

Prince of Peace has partnered with Shaare Torah and the Islamic Society of the Washington Area to host the first ever Montgomery County Interfaith 5K run.
The event will take place on September 5th at the Soccerplex in Germantown. Proceeds from this event will benefit Gaithersburg HELP. Putting on an event of this size requires many volunteers, a lot of planning, and area business sponsors. If you work for or own a business in Montgomery County that might be willing to be a sponsor, please see Pastor Christine. Sponsorship levels start as low as $275. Mark your calendars now for this great, family fun event.

Registration is open for the final Derek Sheely LEAD THE WAY 4.0-Mile Run and 1-Mile Walk on Saturday, June 11 at 8:40 am
at Northwest High School in Germantown. Help increase awareness of concussions and support advancements in education, prevention, and treatment of traumatic brain injuries. Visit www.thedereksheelyfoundation.org for more info, to register, or to donate. We also need volunteers; please email Kristen Sheely for info.

Fruitful Fields, the Prince of Peace Community Garden, has fenced-in plots for your favorite herbs, vegetables and flowers. The garden areas are located behind the Besecker Center, individual plots surround the three central plots in which food is grown for Gaithersburg HELP. We also need help watering, weeding and harvesting produce for donation. For more info or to help, contact Marybeth Stockman or sign up in the narthex.

The Flower Chart for 2016 has been posted and several dates in June are still open! Sign up on the bulletin board.

The Serving in Worship schedule for May & June has been posted on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts. Thanks!

Debt Reduction Campaign:  Foundations for Our Future

Where we are now...
Our mortgage is paid every month out of our Debt Reduction Fund. We have a little more than ten years left on our mortgage, with our monthly payment just under $3,000. Right now we are not bringing in enough monthly donations designated to the Debt Reduction Fund to cover our monthly payment. We are luckily not operating in a deficit because we have some money in the fund that we can use to cover the difference. Every month we are using about $1,000 from the pool of money in the fund, along with our monthly donations to the fund, in order to make our mortgage payment. Although we are able to make our mortgage payments right now, our excess funds will eventually run out.

Where we need to be...
In order to make our monthly mortgage payments, we need to increase our donations to the Debt Reduction Fund. Any donations received above the mortgage amount can be applied to the principal, at the treasurer's discretion.

Where we want to be...
Ideally, we would like to try to get to a place where we can double our mortgage payments, which would result in paying off our mortgage early. An early payoff would result in Prince of Peace having more options, financially, for ministries and/or building improvements.

What can we start to do now?
We would like to ask the congregation to prayerfully consider making additional donations to the Debt Reduction fund in order to 1) make the mortgage payments, and 2) hopefully begin to make additional payments to pay off the mortgage early. Please be sure that any additional donations you are providing are designated to the Debt Reduction Fund.

Who can answer questions I may have?
A Debt Reduction Campaign team is being formed to head these efforts. If you have any questions about the campaign or the Debt Reduction Fund, please contact Sarah Yonder, the council liaison on the team.
