This Week at Prince of Peace...

The Ascension of Our Lord                                               May 8, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
Acts 1:1-11; Psalm 47; Ephesians 1:15-23

GOSPEL:  Luke 24:44-53
Then Jesus said to the disciples, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you - that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God.

This weekend, we celebrate the First Communion of: Addison Barr, Ricky Bolek, David Butler, Eric Ely, Eric Hoeger, Cole Knaus, Connor Kohne, Lila Koundinya, Phebe Koundinya, Jean Carlos Panning, Maicol Panning, Evan Schneider, Dekker Spielman, Cruz Witten & Yasya Yanevskyy!

For Pentecost, May 14 & 15, we will read the Pentecost story in a variety of languages to celebrate the wide reach of the Spirit's power. If you speak another language, please sign up in the narthex or email the Office to read the gospel in that language at one or more services.

Join us for our next Saturday Dinner Out on May 7 around 6:15 pm at Moby Dick's in the Kentlands (105 Market St). All are welcome!

The Racial Justice Team will be presenting a showing of the movie 'Selma' on May 13th in the Sanctuary. The issue of race relations, legislation, and the response of the church is critical in today's societal climate. We have invited other congregations in the area to join us to broaden our discussion and understanding. Please make plans to join us. Teenage youth are especially encouraged to attend. Pizza dinner 6pm; movie showing 6:30pm with discussion following. Childcare will be provided. Questions? See Pastor Christine.

Join Body and Soul each Thursday for group exercise from 6:30-7:30 pm. Instead of discussion groups, Marybeth will be available for free, private diet or exercise consultations by appointment from 6:00-6:30 pm and from 7:30-8:00 pm. Call Marybeth at 240-644-4146 for info or to schedule a private session. Click here for more details on the class listed below.

Come join the Playgroup on  Sunday, May 8th for a late afternoon playdate at 4pm to check out the new natural playscape at Gaithersburg's Constitution Gardens Park. This park features "unique interactive play spaces that have been inspired by the cultural, economic and natural history of the area." In case of rain, we'll meet at the church nursery instead. PoP Playgroup is a great way for families and their babies/toddlers/preschoolers to connect with each other. Please contact Jamie Pflasterer or Lauren Gibson with any questions.

Memorial Garden - The new bushes and trees are in, but there is still work to be done. We will be weeding the garden this Monday and Tuesday evening (5/9 & 5/10), starting at 6:30 pm. Bring your garden gloves and trowels! All helpers welcome. For info, contact Jennifer Maloney or Judy Bruening.

The Women's Book Group and Fellowship committee are hosting a Baby Shower for Pastor Christine on Sunday, May 22 from 1:30-3:30 pm. If you would like to help plan the shower, please email Deborah Dixon or sign up in the narthex. We will hold a planning meeting in early May. This is our opportunity to provide low cost goods to people in our community who are in need; to recycle and re-use as part of our commitment to good environmental stewardship; and to give proceeds and donated items to organizations in our community that help those who are struggling. If you haven't already volunteered to help, please sign up in the narthex! We also need sign ups for donations of food and drinks! We look forward to everyone in the congregation being able to assist in some way in making the Yard Sale a success!

Our next Habitat for Humanity Work Day is Saturday, May 21. Sign up in the narthex or email Chris Michel if interested. Location and specifics coming soon!

Fruitful Fields, the Prince of Peace Community Garden, has fenced-in plots for your favorite herbs, vegetables and flowers. If you have been contemplating a way to grow more of your own food, here is your chance. The garden areas are located behind the Besecker Center, individual plots surround the three central plots in which food is grown for Gaithersburg HELP. We also need help watering, weeding and harvesting produce for donation. For more info or to help, contact Marybeth Stockman or sign up in the narthex.

Good News for our Debt Reduction Efforts! On February 1, 2016, Thrivent Mortgage reset our mortgage to a 5 year rate of 3.25% with a monthly payment of $2,881. Although we have about 10 years left to pay on this loan (approximately $330K remaining), we are hoping to do it in a much shorter time frame! Thank you for your continued support as we work to reduce this debt to zero. Donations to our Debt Reduction Fund are encouraged!

Support Prince of Peace EVERY TIME You Shop at Amazon

Would you like to support Prince of Peace every time you shop at Amazon, at no cost to you? When you shop using AmazonSmile, the AmazonSmile Foundation donates 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to your charity of choice. AmazonSmile is completely integrated with Amazon.com; you use the same account and have the same shopping cart, Wish List, Registry, and account info.

It's easy to set up and use. First click on the following link to tell Amazon that you want donations to be made to Prince of Peace: http://smile.amazon.com/ch/52-1283295; then whenever you want to make a purchase at Amazon, go to smile.amazon.com instead of www.amazon.com. (AmazonSmile will remember the nonprofit you previously selected.) Only purchases made thru smile.amazon.com will be eligible for donations. When logged on, you should see "Supporting Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Gaithersburg, MD" at the top of the homepage.

You can also set up your charity choice by logging in to Amazon using Smile.Amazon.com, and choosing from the menu of available charities. Be sure to select Prince of Peace, Gaithersburg, MD (since there are many other PoPs).

Note: if you already use Goodshop, continue with that because the donation amount is higher than AmazonSmile. To learn about that program go to Goodshop.com to set up an account and select a charity.

Thanks for supporting Prince of Peace!
