This Week at Prince of Peace...

The Third Sunday of Easter                                           April 10, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
Acts 9:1-20; Psalm 30; Revelation 5:11-14

GOSPEL:  John 21:1-19
After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, you have no fish, have you?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off.
When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs." A second time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go." (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, "Follow me."

The Serving in Worship schedule for April & May has been posted
on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts. Thanks!

The April Glad Tidings is available on our website!

Enrich the lives of the residents of the Village at Rockville (formerly the National Lutheran Home) by joining The Auxiliary. The Auxiliary provides the "extras" that make life for the elderly residents an enjoyable experience: birthday parties and gifts, bus trips, Christmas gifts, hearing aid batteries, etc. Join or renew your membership April 3 through April 17 between services or leave your membership form in the Office. See the display in the narthex or contact Donna Von Wald.

Women's Bible Study has begun a new study of the book Accidental Saints by Nadia Bolz-Weber. Join us on Tuesdays at 12:30 pm. This is a great time to join the group! You do not need to attend every week. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Christine.

Body & Soul will not meet on April 14 or April 21. Join us for the next class in the Youth Center on Thursday, April 28 from 6-8pm. Click here for more details on the class listed below.

On Saturday, April 16th we will once again be participating in the Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup from 9am-1pm. We will start our cleanup at Speicher Run (the small stream behind the church) and follow it to the Muddy Branch stream. This is the largest regional event of its kind! We expect to have fun, pick up a lot of trash, and make a real difference. Supplies will be provided. Meet in the back parking lot at 9am. Questions? Contact Lesa Sullivan.

The May Glad Tidings deadline is Sunday, April 17. Please submit your articles, photos, etc. to Martha Rogers

Women's Book Group ~ Whether we share opinions on a book or find ourselves on opposite sides, the POP Women's Book Group always enjoys the fellowship and challenging conversation at our gatherings. Join us for the next discussion on Thursday, April 14, at 7:30 pm at the home of Susan Victor and Joan Kowalik. We will discuss A Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner, a tale of two women whose lives are touched by love, tragedy, and acceptance. RSVP to Susan.

First Communion instruction will be offered beginning Sunday, April 24 for children at least in 3rd grade. If you'd like your child to participate, please contact Pastor Steve!

Human Trafficking is very real here in suburban Maryland. The Maryland legislature, the local police departments, and advocacy groups are all trying to come together to eradicate Human Trafficking. They would like to have local churches partner with them. On Sunday, April 24th, Tami Bulla will be presenting on this issue. Tami works for the Chief of Police and in the office of Planning and Legislative Affairs and has been specifically working with our representatives on stiffer laws for those stalking and seeking to sell teenagers. Join us at 12:30pm on April 24th in the sanctuary to learn more about this issue. Questions? See Pastor Christine.

Come join the Playgroup on Saturday, April 30 at 11:00 am for coffee and chat at the Prince of Peace playground! Enjoy some time connecting with other parents at the church while your children enjoy the spring weather. Bubbles and sidewalk chalk will add to the fun. (We'll meet inside in the nursery in case of rain.) Then on Sunday, May 8th we'll meet for a late afternoon playdate at 4pm to check out the new natural playscape at Gaithersburg's Constitution Gardens Park. This park features "unique interactive play spaces that have been inspired by the cultural, economic and natural history of the area." In case of rain, we'll meet at the church nursery instead. PoP Playgroup is a great way for families and their babies/toddlers/preschoolers to connect with each other. Please contact Jamie Pflasterer or Lauren Gibson with any questions.

Good News for our Debt Reduction Efforts! On February 1, 2016, Thrivent Mortgage reset our mortgage to a 5 year rate of 3.25% with a monthly payment of $2,881. Although we have about 10 years left to pay on this loan (approximately $330K remaining), we are hoping to do it in a much shorter time frame! Thank you for your continued support as we work to reduce this debt to zero. Donations to our Debt Reduction Fund are encouraged!

The new POP Directory is available! Pick one up from the narthex.

Because of our three services, not everyone is familiar with all members of the congregation, and we are often asked if a particular name on the Prayer List is a member of the congregation. In order to clarify this the Continuing Prayers list is now divided into PoP Members and Family & Friends. Hopefully this change will facilitate communication within the church. AmazonSmile is completely integrated with Amazon.com; you use the same account and have the same shopping cart, Wish List, Registry, and account info.

It's easy to set up and use. First click on the following link to tell Amazon that you want donations to be made to Prince of Peace: http://smile.amazon.com/ch/52-1283295; then whenever you want to make a purchase at Amazon, go to smile.amazon.com instead of www.amazon.com. (AmazonSmile will remember the nonprofit you previously selected.) Only purchases made thru smile.amazon.com will be eligible for donations. When logged on, you should see "Supporting Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Gaithersburg, MD" at the top of the homepage.
