This Week at Prince of Peace...

The Second Sunday in Lent                                    February 21, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18; Psalm 27; Philippians 3:17-4:1

GOSPEL:  Luke 13:31-35
At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you." He said to them, "Go and tell that fox for me, 'Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.' Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

Be sure to join us this weekend (Feb 20-21) to welcome Chris Schaefer as our guest preacher at all services! On Sunday at 10:00 am, Chris will also give a presentation on his recent mission trip to Honduras. Join us in the sanctuary between services. Our Adult Study "Divine Drama" takes a break this week so all can attend the presentation. The Adult Study resumes next Sunday, February 28 at 9:45 am.

Note our Serving Event this Sunday, February 21 will now begin at noon! Join us as we assemble "origami barnyards" for each child staying at the Children's Inn at NIH. Several of our Sunday School classes got us off to a good start by creating origami animals in their classes last Sunday. Help us wrap up the project!

All PoP Donation Statements for 2015 have been mailed. If you did not receive one, please contact Helen Griffith, our Financial Secretary. Due to a tech glitch, the statements were not emailed

During the winter months, if inclement weather requires us to cancel services or activities, a notice will appear on our website homepage.

During the Wednesdays in Lent (March 12 - April 9), we will have soup suppers from 6:15-7:15 pm and Evening Prayer from 7:15-7:45 pm. Join us and consider inviting a friend who might benefit from experiencing God's peace and community.

Lenten Sharing Bags are back! February 14th through March 20th, we will collect for Interfaith Clothing Center (new socks & underwear for adults & children) and Gaithersburg HELP (diapers, formula, & baby food). Interfaith Clothing Center, part of Interfaith Works, has been helping qualified low-income families in Montgomery County for over 20 years and is in need of new socks and underwear! Gaithersburg HELP provides diapers, baby formula, and baby food to eligible clients. They are in need of diapers, cans of powdered baby formula, Stage 2 baby food, and single grain rice or oatmeal baby cereal.  Please take a bag, fill with as many donation items as you'd like, and leave all donations in the narthex by Sunday, March 20. For more info, contact: Marybeth Stockman or Becky Carr.

Books and Beer, aka The Men's Book Club of Prince of Peace, continues its 2016 camaraderie campaign  with a lively discussion of Marshall Brain's Manna: Two Visions of Humanity's Future. All men of PoP and their male friends are cordially invited.

POP Game Night: Teens and adults - Do you know what a meeple is? Do you yearn to test your strategy mettle? If so, join us here at Prince of Peace for some "Friday Night Magic" fun on February 26 from 7-10pm. This will be an evening of grown up board games like Carcassonne, Agricola, Pyramix, Machi Koro, Puzzle Strike, Go and any favorites you'd like to bring! We may be able to have children's game room to be supervised by our middle schoolers but we need middle school volunteers to make that happen. Any questions, please contact Christian Michel.

Prayer Practice during Worship
~ Meditation, prayer, and reflection are practices which are beneficial to our relationships with God and others throughout the year. During Lent we are called especially to be mindful of these relationships. For some, the tactile experience of lighting a candle during worship allows them to center themselves for a moment in prayer and the lit candle reminds us of Jesus' words of hope, "I am the light of the world." During Lent a small prayer table will be set up during worship. We invite you to take a moment before worship or during communion to pause at the table, pray, and light a candle as a symbol of hope.

Pastor Steve will be leading a trip to the Holy Land in September of 2016! Deposits are due by the beginning of March. To learn more, you can click here to read the brochure or email Pastor Steve. This will be a great trip and an excellent opportunity to deepen your faith and to learn more about the Bible and biblical history in a hands-on, experiential way!

Bible Art Journaling: This year we are offering a devotional class which encourages you to engage actively with the word of God through doodling, illustration, and note-taking in your Bible. We meet once a month, but you do not need to attend every session. Our next meeting is Sunday, February 28 from 6-7:30pm. It's not too late to join in the fun! Please bring a 'journaling Bible' with you to class. Questions? See Pastor Christine.

Women's Retreat - Wearing God:
On March 5 Pastor Christine will be hosting a women's retreat at Prince of Peace from 9:30am - 2:30pm. The theme is entitled: "Wearing God". During the retreat we will discuss and encounter overlooked ways of meeting God (ie. laughter, clothing, cooking, etc). The day will be filled with scripture, discussion, creating, and fellowship. I hope you are able to take some time out of your busy schedules and join other women for a day of refreshment. Sign up in the narthex. A cost of $20 per registrant will cover the cost of lunch and supplies. Please contact Pastor Christine if you have questions or are in need of financial assistance.

It's storytime with the PoP Playgroup in March as we meet at the Germantown Library (19840 Century Blvd, Germantown, 20874) on Saturday, March 5 at 10:30 am for a family storytime for all ages that includes stories, fingerplays, songs and other early literacy activities. PoP Playgroup is a great way for families and their babies/toddlers/preschoolers to connect with each other. Please contact Jamie or Lauren with any questions!

Clean Water is our March focus for Learning & Serving! Join us on March 6 at 10:00 am for a presentation in the sanctuary. Then serve with us on Sunday, March 13 from 1-3pm as we pick up trash along a nearby stream. Youth earn SSL hours. Meet at church in "cleaning clothing" appropriate for this project. Questions? Contact Lesa Sullivan.

Calling all 4th-6th graders... Join the fun at Sky Zone on Sunday, March 13! Meet there at 5:10 pm to check-in, complete a waiver, and watch an intro video. Jumping: 5:30-6:30pm and Pizza & cookies: 6:30-7pm. Cost is $18 (includes required sock purchase). Please RSVP to Lori Kohne or signup in the narthex for reservation purposes. Prince of Peace Members Make Super Contributions to the Souper Bowl Event! Congratulations to all on a great response to the Souper Bowl Event. Not only did we experience a record-breaking collection but, according to donations, we chose the Broncos to win. The volunteer group competition was rigorous! All of the groups made significant donations but the top donors were (drum roll please....)
First place - Sunday School; Second Place - Council/Finance; Third place - Women's book club/Women's bible study.
We collected over 480 items and about $145 in cash donations! (Please note these results have not been verified by Price Waterhouse, but are as accurate as Deborah Dixon's counting abilities!!). Thank you to Deborah & Chuck Dixon for their leadership and to all who participated in this event. The people served by Gaithersburg HELP will benefit greatly from your generous contributions. PoP members again prove to have a big heart for others!
It's not too late to donate... our food collection baskets are always in the foyer!
