temptation of Jesus

This Week at Prince of Peace...

The First Sunday in Lent                                          February 14, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
Deuteronomy 26:1-11; Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16; Romans 10:8b-13

GOSPEL:  Luke 4:1-13
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread." Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'"
Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, "To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." Jesus answered him, "It is written,
'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'"
Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written,
'He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,'
and
'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'"
Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.

Many Thanks to Jean Bernstein and her crew of adult and youth volunteers for the wonderful Pancake Supper on Shrove Tuesday!

During the winter months, if inclement weather requires us to cancel services or activities, a notice will appear on our website homepage.

Our Adult Study "Divine Drama" continues Sunday at 9:45 am in BYC conference room. You do not need to attend every week-join us!

Prayer Practice during Worship ~ Meditation, prayer, and reflection are practices which are beneficial to our relationships with God and others throughout the year. During Lent we are called especially to be mindful of these relationships. For some, the tactile experience of lighting a candle during worship allows them to center themselves for a moment in prayer and the lit candle reminds us of Jesus' words of hope, "I am the light of the world." During Lent a small prayer table will be set up during worship. We invite you to take a moment before worship or during communion to pause at the table, pray, and light a candle as a symbol of hope.

During the Wednesdays in Lent (March 12 - April 9), we will have soup suppers from 6:15-7:15 pm and Evening Prayer from 7:15-7:45 pm. Join us and consider inviting a friend who might benefit from experiencing God's peace and community.

The Serving in Worship schedule for February & March has been posted
on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts. Thanks!

The February Glad Tidings is available on our website!

Gaithersburg HELP provides diapers, baby formula, and baby food to eligible clients. They are in need of diapers, cans of powdered baby formula, Stage 2 baby food, and single grain rice or oatmeal baby cereal.

Women's Retreat - Wearing God:
On March 5 Pastor Christine will be hosting a women's retreat at Prince of Peace from 9:30am - 2:30pm. The theme is entitled: "Wearing God". During the retreat we will discuss and encounter overlooked ways of meeting God (ie. laughter, clothing, cooking, etc). The day will be filled with scripture, discussion, creating, and fellowship. I hope you are able to take some time out of your busy schedules and join other women for a day of refreshment. Sign up in the narthex. A cost of $20 per registrant will cover the cost of lunch and supplies. Please contact Pastor Christine if you have questions or are in need of financial assistance.

Pastor Steve will be leading a trip to the Holy Land in September of 2016!
Many of you have seen pictures and heard Pastor Steve speak about his last two trips, but this time, Pastor Steve is leading the trip and inviting PoP members and friends to join in! Deposits are due by the beginning of March. To learn more, you can click here to read the brochure or email Pastor Steve. This will be a great trip and an excellent opportunity to deepen your faith and to learn more about the Bible and biblical history in a hands-on, experiential way!

Prince of Peace Members Make Super Contributions to the Souper Bowl Event! Congratulations to all on a great response to the Souper Bowl Event. Not only did we experience a record-breaking collection but, according to donations, we chose the Broncos to win. The volunteer group competition was rigorous! All of the groups made significant donations but the top donors were (drum roll please....)
First place - Sunday School; Second Place - Council/Finance; Third place - Women's book club/Women's bible study.
We collected over 480 items and about $145 in cash donations! (Please note these results have not been verified by Price Waterhouse, but are as accurate as Deborah Dixon's counting abilities!!). Thank you to Deborah & Chuck Dixon for their leadership and to all who participated in this event. The people served by Gaithersburg HELP will benefit greatly from your generous contributions. PoP members again prove to have a big heart for others!
It's not too late to donate... our food collection baskets are always in the foyer!
