This Week at Prince of Peace...

Fourth Sunday after Epiphany                                 January 31, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
Jeremiah 1:4-10; Psalm 71:1-6; 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

GOSPEL:  Luke 4:21-30
Then Jesus began to say to [the people in the synagogue in Nazareth], "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, "Is not this Joseph's son?" He said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, 'Doctor, cure yourself!' And you will say, 'Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.'" And he said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet's hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian." When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.

Please remember in your prayers this week...

A New Twist This Year... It's a Competition:
In addition to supporting your favorite team, we want to learn which of our ministry groups are the most generous. So, as you drop your donations (food or cash) into the containers, check off the number of items you donated for a group that you belong to or support. Our competing groups are: Sunday School Classes, Choirs/Grace Notes , Council, Fellowship Committee, Finance Committee, Men's Book Club and Men's Group, Social Ministries, & Woman's Book Club and Bible Study.

Get crafty with the PoP Playgroup in February when we meet at the
Gaithersburg Community Museum (9 S Summit Ave, Gaithersburg, 20877) on Saturday, February 6 at 11:00 am. We'll make Valentines out of recycled materials during the museum's family discovery day. Admission is free, but the museum requests donations to cover the cost of materials for the craft. PoP Playgroup is a great way for families and their babies/toddlers/preschoolers to connect with each other. Please contact Jamie or Lauren
with any questions!

On Sunday, February 7 at 12:30 pm, we continue studying the Safe Haven curriculum which addresses the problem of human trafficking. All are invited to learn about this issue. Meet in BYC conference room. If you have questions, please see Pastor Christine.

All are welcome to Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner on Tuesday, February 9 from 5-7pm in the Fellowship Hall. Youth 6th grade and up are needed to cook and serve a delicious dinner of pancakes and sausage. Gluten-free/allergen-free pancakes are also on the menu. After dinner, Pastor Steve will lead us in one of his favorite rituals - burning palms for our Ash Wednesday service. For more info or to volunteer, contact Jean Bernstein.

Come join us as we begin our Lenten journey at our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, February 10 at 7:30 pm. Then during the Wednesdays in Lent beginning February 17th, we will have soup suppers from 6:15-7:15 pm and Evening Prayer from 7:15-7:45 pm.

Families with pre-school - elementary age children and grandchildren, and their siblings, are invited for dinner, crafts, a Bible story and fellowship. Sign up in the narthex, email Judy Bruening, or just come! We will provide a main dish. If you would like to bring a side dish/salad or a dessert sign up in the narthex or let Judy know. If you just have younger children you are welcome to join us for fellowship, too.

Books and Beer, aka The Men's Book Club of Prince of Peace, continues its 2016 camaraderie campaign
with a lively discussion of Marshall Brain's Manna: Two Visions of Humanity's Future. You read the book, we'll provide the beer and munchies. On Thursday, February 18 at 7:30 pm we will meet at the home of Garry Linton. Please RSVP to Garry. All men of PoP and their male friends are cordially invited.

Women's Retreat - Wearing God:
On March 5 Pastor Christine will be hosting a women's retreat at Prince of Peace from 9:30am - 2:30pm. The theme is entitled: "Wearing God". During the retreat we will discuss and encounter overlooked ways of meeting God (ie. laughter, clothing, cooking, etc). The day will be filled with scripture, discussion, creating, and fellowship. I hope you are able to take some time out of your busy schedules and join other women for a day of refreshment. Sign up in the narthex. A cost of $20 per registrant will cover the cost of lunch and supplies. Please contact Pastor Christine if you have questions or are in need of financial assistance.

Pastor Steve will be leading a trip to the Holy Land in September of 2016!
Many of you have seen pictures and heard Pastor Steve speak about his last two trips, but this time, Pastor Steve is leading the trip and inviting PoP members and friends to join in! To learn more, you can click here to read the brochure or email Pastor Steve. This will be a great trip and an excellent opportunity to deepen your faith and to learn more about the Bible and biblical history in a hands-on, experiential way!

Recycle your Advent wreath from the Intergenerational Event! Please remove the greens and leave the other parts in the basket in the foyer.

The Serving in Worship schedule for January & February has been posted
on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts. Thanks!

2016 Offering Envelopes are available for pickup in the narthex. If you do not wish to use envelopes, please leave a note or email the Office. If you do not see a box with your name and want to use Offering Envelopes in 2016, please contact Bob Butler.

The Flower Chart for 2016 has been posted and there are openings in early February.
Flowers can be given in memory or honor of a person or special occasion. A donation of $30 covers the flowers for a week, and they are yours to take home after the late service. Sign up on the Chart posted on the bulletin board in the narthex and place your donation (marked "Altar Flowers") in the Offering. Thanks for adding to our worship experience!

The December/January Glad Tidings is available on our website!

Our Adult Study "Divine Drama" continues Sunday at 9:45 am in BYC conference room. Join us for this year long, in-depth course that examines the Bible as a whole and its major themes. You do not need to attend every week-come when you can. Questions? See Pastor Christine.

Join us for Sunday School each week at 9:45 am!  For younger students we continue to use a rotational model which provides an experiential approach similar to VBS. For Middle and High School students, we use cool and quirky workbooks and short films to explore relevant topics. Your kids won't want to miss it!!

Please consider giving to the ELCA Disaster Response to assist with the refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe. Visit the ELCA Disaster Response webpage to donate or learn more about how you can help.
